The Bee City Committee meeting was called to order by Alan Hew, Chair, at 7:01pm.
1. The agenda was reviewed, and a few items were added for review. Ms. Espindola made a
motion to accept. Ms. Haber seconded. Motion caries for approval 5-0-0.
2. The November 9, 2022, minutes were reviewed. Ms. Brown motioned to accept the minutes
with the amended changes. Ms. Espindola seconded. Motion carries for approval 5-0-0.
3. City activities:
a. Renewal for Mayor’s Monarch Pledge was completed and submitted prior to the
December 1, 2022 deadline.
b. Ms. Alexander will work on Bee City USA renewal which will be due in February 2023.
c. No Mow Month resolution was approved at the December 13, 2022 City Council
meeting.
d. Good Neighbor Day went well. All plants were delivered and planted.
e. City Council approved 5 bee hotels for North College Park including the funding to
purchase them. Suggestions for placing the hotels are:
Davis Hall
Odessa Park
Davis Field – at the end of Iroquois and Kennesaw Sts., along the railroad
Youth & Family Services Building
Duvall Field concession stand
The bee hotels will need to have maintenance on replacing the tubes, etc. and it cannot
be handled by DPW staff.
4. The Girl Scouts Troop 96 thanks the Bee City Committee and Ms. Alexander for their guidance
and assistance on their bee hotel and pollinator garden plantings.
5. The Annual report and work plan was reviewed. Based on amended changes discussed, Ms.
Espindola made a motion to accept and send to City Council. Ms. Haber seconded. Motion
carries 5-0-0.
6. Municipal Scene article for– December issue- Tips on planning for next year’s garden - Ms.
Brown.
7. US Geological Survey (USGS) has offered space on their land area in Beltsville for growing
native plants. Mr. Hew has reached out to Laurel and Greenbelt and will be contact Berwyn
Heights to see if they are interested in participating.
8. Mr. Hew will also be discussing have a Multi-city pollinator friendly festival and having a
showing of “Garden of 1000 Bees.”
9. The next meeting is scheduled for January 11, 2023, at 7:00pm.
Ms. Espindola made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Mr. Sauer seconded. Motion carries 5-0-0.
The meeting adjourned at 9:00pm.
