DRAFT Minutes Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Tribute Committee Thursday January 16, 2020 7:00 p.m. College Park Community Center Members Present Absent Lilla Sutton, Co-chair X Anita Wolley, Co-chair X Dottie Chicquelo X Jordan Schakner X Thelma Lomax, Honorary Member X Sue Rishworth, Honorary Member X Staff and Others Monroe Dennis, Councilmember District Two X Sharon Fletcher, Staff Liaison X Carleveva Thompson, Contract Secretary X Gabi Wurtzel, Event Coordinator X I. Call to Order Ms. Sutton called the meeting to order at 7:06 p.m. II. Review and Approval of Agenda Ms. Chicquelo motioned to approve the agenda as presented. Second by Mr. Schakner. All members were in favor; no opposed. III. Organizational Changes: Staff Liaison, Policies and Ethics Ms. Wurtzel informed the Committee that Mr. Somers, City Manager, will visit the next meeting to review upcoming changes to City Boards and Committees. Ms. Wurtzel also announced that she will be the staff liaison for the Committee moving forward as Ms. Fletcher will be stepping down from the Committee as the staff liaison. IV. Review and Approval of 12/19/19 Meeting Minutes The Committee reviewed the meeting minutes from the December 19, 2019 meeting. Ms. Wolley motioned to approve the December meeting minutes as presented. Second by Ms. Chicquelo. All members were in favor; no opposed. V. 2020 Event Review a. Venue – The venue had an older appearance and the chairs were very squeaky. The entrance was very dark and did not appear to be accessible for disabled guests. The rehearsal rooms were too far away from the restrooms. It was stated that the venue was smaller and made the event more intimate. 1 b. Program Participants – Obtaining program participants was very challenging, but thanks to Ms. Chicquelo and Jose, program participants were confirmed for the event. It was stated that the venue format was liked and very educational. The panelist selection needs to be more diverse. c. Attendance – The venue capacity was 188 and there was very good attendance at the event. d. Reception – There was no reception, but guests wanted to stay after to ask questions about the presentation. e. Expenditures – Tabled for next meeting. f. Video showing dates – The video recording of the event will be broadcasted on the City cable television stations. VI. Annual Report for submission to Mayor and Council Please submit any notes to Ms. Wurtzel for the annual report. The Committee needs to submit reports for 2019 and 2020. VII. Membership Mr. Dennis has a recommendation for a new Committee member. VIII. 2021 Planning Mayor and Council will be reviewing all City events during a February work session. It was decided to hold off on 2021 planning until Mr. Somers comes to the next meeting to discuss upcoming changes. IX. Next Meeting The next meeting is scheduled for Thursday March 19, 2020 at 7:00 p. m. X. Adjournment Ms. Wolley made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Second by Mr. Schakner.
