Call to Order
Ms. Bernache called the meeting to order at 7:30pm.
Old Business
Approval of the September Minutes Mr. Toledo made a motion to approve as written. Second by Ms.
Sanders. All members were in favor. Minutes approved.
Cooperation with other Educational Advisory Committees Ms. Bernache stated that it is important to
brainstorm ideas with other Committees. Mr. Rich joined the meeting to share activities conducted by the
Greenbelt Advisory Council on Education (ACE). The EAC shared with Mr. Rich the activities
conducted by EAC. The next Greenbelt ACE meeting is scheduled on 10/25/16 at Greenbelt City Hall
Municipal building at 8pm.
New Business
Review of EAC Educational Grants:
The educational grant applications submitted were reviewed by the EAC and the following schools have
been approved by the committee to receive grant awards:
1. University Park Elementary - $2,500
2. Hyattsville Middle School - $2,500
3. Cherokee Lane Elementary - $2,500
4. Berwyn Heights Elementary - $2,500
5. Parkdale High School - $7,500
6. Paint Branch Elementary - $7,500
7. Hollywood Elementary - $7,500
8. Buck Lodge Middle School - $2,500
Greenbelt Middle School and High Point High School did not submit grant applications by the deadline
of 10/10/16. Ms. Bernache will reach out to High Point and Mr. Toledo will reach out to Greenbelt
Middle to remind the schools to submit their grant applications prior to the deadline. These schools will
receive an extended deadline of 10/31/16 to submit their grant applications.
Ms. Higgins will submit the approved grant applications to the City Council at their Worksession on
11/1/16.
Review of Essay submissions for UMD 2017 Summer Camp Scholarship
The committee reviewed twelve essays on “My Experience at Last Summer’s University of Maryland’s
Camp”. The winners selected and approved by the committee are as follows:
High School
1st place winner - Marcos Silver - $200 stipend
Elementary School
1st place winner - Christian Pacheco - $200 stipend
The committee proposed for the remaining essay applicants to receive $100 stipends. This will be
presented to the City Council for approval on 11/9/16.
Adjournment
The public meeting adjourned and proceeded into an Executive Session at 9:00pm.
