motion to approve the November meeting minutes. Second by Ms. Mahoney. All members were in favor
and the November meeting minutes were approved.
UMD Community Outreach
Ms. Bernache asked the committee if anyone has thoughts or ideas to help support Mr. Fellows
Community Outreach program. Ms. Sanders has reached out to the Berwyn Heights community to see
when their next meeting will be so she can discuss the outreach program. Ms. Powers would like more
information on Good Neighbor Day and asked if a post on Next Door would help to get the community
more involved.

date and time and inform the committee.

City Council Meeting regarding Education Grants
Ms. Bernache discussed the City Council’s approval of all the education grants and there were questions
on how the grants were received. Ms. Bernache explained the committee receives an end of year
summary of how the grant was implemented at the school and that principals of the winning schools
receive a big check to present in the school.
The 2nd or 4th Tuesday in February will be the date for the Principals of the winning schools to receive
their checks. The schools receiving the $7500 grants are Hollywood, Paint Branch, Greenbelt Middle and
Parkdale.
Review UM Summer Camp Application criteria
The committee reviewed the application from last year to see if any edits were needed. The following
edits were suggested:
➢ Add “apply” to the front page
➢ Move the application to the beginning of the packet
➢ Remove the word “only” from the scholarship note
➢ Add a post card to be completed at the same time as the application to send at the beginning of
the summer to inform the committee if the child will attend or not.
➢ Add a flow chart in the application to make it easier for residents to understand if their child is
eligible for the scholarship.
Three children did not attend camp last year and no notice was given. The committee decided that if
these children apply again, no grant will be given for 1 year and if the children apply the following year, a
reason as to why they didn’t attend the previous year will need to be provided.
Books for next College Park Day
Books for College Park Day will be purchased through Scholastic and Ms. Bernache will check with
Barnes and Noble to see if book donations can be provided. Ms. Higgins will provide the budget to the
committee at the next meeting to see how much money can be allotted for the purchase of books. The
committee discussed purchasing books for Pre-K, more Spanish books, and to increase the number of
journals to 50 since they were very popular at last year’s event.
The committee also discussed having a banner or a sign for the table. Ms. Higgins will get a quote for a
4ft banner.
PGCPS Immersion Task Force
Ms. Powers is a member of the Prince Georges County language immersion task force, representing Paint
Branch. This is a program looking at all immersion elementary schools to help make the transition of
language from elementary to middle and high schools.
