Approved May 20, 2019 Education Advisory Committee (EAC) Minutes March 18, 2019 City Hall Attendees Members Present Absent David Toledo, Dist 1 __X __ Dawn Powers, Dist 2 __X __ Melissa Day, Dist 3 __X __ Carolyn Bernache, Dist 4 __X __ Doris Ellis, Dist 4 _X __ Stacy Currie, Dist 2 __X __ Rose Greene-Colby, Dist 3 __X __ Also Present Peggy Higgins, City Liaison Carleveva Thompson, Contract Secretary Call to Order Ms. Bernache called the meeting to order at 7:34 p.m. Old Business Approval of the February Meeting Minutes The committee reviewed the meeting minutes from the February 25, 2019 meeting and corrections were made. Ms. Powers made a motion to approve the February meeting minutes as amended. Second by Ms. Currie. All members were in favor; no opposed. Results of discussion with principal’s on February 26th meeting Ms. Ellis and Mr. Toledo attended the dinner with the principal of Cherokee Lane, Mr. Galbraith, prior to the Council meeting on February 26th. The 5th graders of Cherokee Lane made a “thank you” banner to express their gratitude for receiving a grant. One of the challenges discussed was the cost of field trips for the students. The schools are not able to use the regular school buses for field trips and have to pay for charter buses for transportation. Ms. Powers made a motion to reach out to the school principals to see if they have line items in their budget for field trip transportation. Mr. Toledo amended the motion to include, in efforts to draft a letter to the City Council to support their collective advocacy to go to the County Board of Education meeting to push for reinstating funds for field trips in our communities. Second by Ms. Currie. All members were in favor; no opposed. Update on Green School Awards 1 Ms. Bernache emailed Buck Lodge and Cherokee Lane for additional information, but hasn’t received a response. Ms. Higgins asked the Committee if they would like to present the green school awards to the schools or just recommend the awards. Ms. Powers made a motion to present the certificates for the Green School Awards with the City-University Partnership. Second by Mr. Toledo. All members were in favor; no opposed. College Park Day The Committee discussed increasing the budget amount for the College Park Day book purchase since there are remaining funds in the budget. The budget amount for books was increased to $2,000 and the amount allocated per age is listed in the table below: Child Age Total budget amount for books Budget amount for Spanish books 0-3 $300 $100 4-6 $300 $100 7-9 $300 $100 10-12 $300 NA 13-18 $300 NA 13-18 $200 for journals New Business City Scholarships to UMD Summer Camp review Ms. Currie suggested the Committee generate a survey to hear feedback from students and parents on the outcome of the summer camp attended. The Committee will make this an agenda item for the next meeting. The Committee has enough money to fund all applicants for the scholarships and still have funds remaining. There are 20 spaces available for the reading camp and five students have signed up. Ms. Currie made a motion to send all applicants to camp. Second by Mr. Toledo. All members were in favor; no opposed. There was a discussion on scholarship applications being submitted late as well as applications with outstanding money due because the scholarship money did not cover the entire camp cost. Ms. Bernache made a motion to add to the summer camp applications a statement that if an application is received late or if there is outstanding money due from a prior camp, this will be taken into consideration for eligibility. Second by Ms. Ellis. All members in favor; no opposed. There is still $2,075 remaining in the budget. The Committee will discuss the use of these funds as an agenda item for the next meeting. Adjournment Ms. Bernache adjourned the meeting at 9:07 p.m. 2
