Minutes Education Advisory Committee (EAC) August 19, 2019 City Hall Attendees Members Present Absent David Toledo, Dist 1 __X __ Dawn Powers, Dist 2 __X __ Melissa Day, Dist 3 __X __ Carolyn Bernache, Dist 4 __X __ Doris Ellis, Dist 4 _X __ Stacy Currie, Dist 2 __X __ Rose Greene-Colby, Dist 3 __X __ Tessie Aikara __X __ Also Present Kiaisha Barber, City Liaison Carleveva Thompson, Contract Secretary Call to Order Ms. Bernache called the meeting to order at 7:35 p.m. Old Business Approval of the May Meeting Minutes The committee reviewed the meeting minutes from the May 20, 2019 meeting. Mr. Toledo made a motion to approve the May meeting minutes as presented. Second by Ms. Ellis. All members in favor; no opposed. College Park Day College Park Day is scheduled for October 5, 2019 from 11am-4pm. Committee members should arrive at 10am to set up. Mr. Toledo purchased various swag such as pencils, bookmarks, and flash cards to pass out. The books and labels have arrived. Ms. Barber has two volunteers that will add the stickers to the books by August 23, 2019. Mr. Toledo will pick up the books from the Youth and Family Services building after the stickers are added and store at his house until the event. Green School Awards Ms. Greene-Colby attended the Green School Awards presentation held at City Hall. Three out of five schools attended the presentation to receive their awards. The teachers provided thank you speeches that expressed how important it was to receive funding and the amount of impact the award has on the students. Mayor Wojahn and Eric Olsen (City-University Partnership) also 1 provided speeches during the presentation. Ms. Greene-Colby thanked the schools for applying and expressed how the EAC enjoyed reading the applications. Update on School Supply Initiative School supplies (composition notebooks, yellow pencils, crayons, glue sticks, and tissues) were delivered to the schools and the school staff were extremely happy to receive these supplies. Ms. Currie used her truck to pick up the supplies from the Dollar Store and delivered the supplies to each school, Cherokee Lane, Buck Lodge, Paint Branch, Berwyn Heights, Hollywood, and University Park. Update on EAC Grants The Committee reviewed the grant applications submitted by the following schools: Hollywood Elementary: $8,000 grant request to purchase Chromebooks for Kindergarten to 1st Grade for the Waterford Early Learning Program, a portion of I-station for the entire school, and Time for Kids for grades K-5. The Committee discussed the school’s request last year to purchase iPads and would like to know what the school will do with those iPads. Mr. Toledo motioned to approve the grant application, second by Ms. Day. All members in favor; no opposed. Buck Lodge Middle: $2,750 grant request to fund the school’s Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports Incentive Program. The Committee decided to postpone grant approval pending the school’s submitted report to EAC. Paint Branch Elementary: $8,000 grant request for supplies to support the Chinese Immersion program. Ms. Currie motioned to approve the grant application pending the school will supply additional details on the grant budget. Second by Ms. Ellis. All members in favor; no opposed. Berwyn Heights Elementary: $2,750 grant request for field trip transportation. The Committee would like the school to clarify what the additional $800 listed in the grant budget will be used for. Ms. Aikara motioned to approve the grant application pending clarification on what the other services budget will be used for. Second by Mr. Toledo. All members in favor; no opposed. Cherokee Lane Elementary: $2,500 grant request for field trip transportation. The school submitted an incomplete application. The Committee will request for the complete application to be provided and will review at the next meeting. 2 High Point High: $2,750 grant request for SAT after school workshop. The Committee will request the school to provide a goal as to the number of students the school plans to enroll and if there is a pre and post-test provided to the students. Ms. Greene-Colby motioned to approve the grant application pending the school provides clarifications. Second by Ms. Currie. All members in favor; no opposed. Hyattsville Middle: $2,750 grant request for private field trip transportation. Mr. Toledo motion to approve the grant application. Second by Ms. Greene-Colby. All members in favor; no opposed. University Park and College Park Academy asked for an extension to submit their grant applications. Parkdale High School did not submit a grant application. New Business Review of the EAC Annual Report Ms. Bernache will send out the drafted annual report for the Committee to review. Agenda Topics for Next Meeting • Review the Committee on Committee’s recommendations to the EAC • Letter to City Council regarding mass school shootings and gun control • Money for field trip transportation – Can the County support transportation for field trips? • Breakfast for School Principals – Youth and Family Services had event in August, next one to be scheduled in December Adjournment Ms. Bernache adjourned the meeting at 8:37 p.m. 3
