Minutes Education Advisory Committee (EAC) March 15, 2021 Virtual Meeting Attendees Members Present Absent David Toledo, Dist 1 _X _ Vilay Senthep, Dist 1 _X _ Mary Daniel, Dist 2 _X _ Dawn Powers, Dist 2 _X _ Melissa Day, Dist 3 __X _ Rose Greene-Colby, Dist 3 _X _ Carolyn Bernache, Dist 4 _X _ Tessie Aikara, Dist 4 _X _ Also Present Rudi Zelman, Literacy Lab Jax Chaudhry, Literacy Lab Ivan Douglas, Literacy Lab Kiaisha Barber, Staff Liaison Maria Mackie, District 4 Council Member Carleveva Thompson, Contract Secretary Call to Order Ms. Bernache called the meeting to order at 7:35 p.m. Old Business Approval of the February Meeting Minutes The Committee reviewed the meeting minutes from the February 22, 2021 meeting and edits were made to the minutes. Ms. Aikara motioned to approve the minutes as amended. Second by Ms. Daniel. All members in favor; no opposed; 6-0. Presentation on the Literacy Lab Jax Chaudry, Ivan Douglas, and Rudi Zelman provided a presentation with information regarding the Literacy Lab programs. The Literacy Lab offers tutoring programs for children in grades pre-K to grade 3. There is also a Leading Man fellowship within the program for recent high school graduates to serve as a residency and provide support to pre-K students. Update on School Supply Distribution 1 Ms. Barber provided an update that the school supplies were ordered from Dollar Tree and will be delivered directly to the schools. Review of Principal’s Survey Ms. Barber informed the EAC that the process for the survey is to have City Communications review the survey and City Communications will advise if legal review is needed or if the survey is ready to be presented. The EAC finalized the survey and it is ready to be sent to City Communications for review. New Business PPE An issue came up in which a student from the University of Maryland that helps in public schools was informed that the University would not provide PPE to the student. The EAC will look into this issue and see how this can be resolved. New Appointee to EAC Ms. Barber informed the EAC that Dr. Dan Levin, from the University of Maryland, is a new appointee to the EAC. City Council Work Session The EAC is on the City Council’s work session agenda scheduled for March 16, 2021. Adjournment Ms. Bernache adjourned the meeting at 8:37 p.m. 2
