Minutes Education Advisory Committee (EAC) February 22, 2021 Virtual Meeting Attendees Members Present Absent David Toledo, Dist 1 _X _ Vilay Senthep, Dist 1 _X _ Mary Daniel, Dist 2 _X _ Dawn Powers, Dist 2 _X _ Melissa Day, Dist 3 __X _ Rose Greene-Colby, Dist 3 _X _ Carolyn Bernache, Dist 4 _X _ Tessie Aikara, Dist 4 _X _ Also Present Kiaisha Barber, Staff Liaison Maria Mackie, District 4 Council Member Carleveva Thompson, Contract Secretary Call to Order Ms. Bernache called the meeting to order at 7:33 p.m. Old Business Approval of the January Meeting Minutes The Committee reviewed the meeting minutes from the January 25, 2021 meeting. Ms. Daniel motioned to revise the 3rd bullet under new business. Second by Ms. Powers. All members in favor; no opposed; 6-0. Ms. Bernache motioned to approve the minutes as amended. Second by Ms. Aikara. All members in favor; no opposed; 6-0. Review EAC Grant Submissions College Park Academy - $2,250 grant for environmental club E-Force Mr. Toledo motioned to approve the grant, less $1,000 for transportation, with the stipulation the school passes their expenditures through the College Park administrative office, explain how the program changed due to COVID-19 and how the school implemented the environmental club. Second by Ms. Powers. Five members in favor, no opposed, Ms. Bernache excluded herself from voting; 5-0-1. Q&A with PGCPS Board member Joshua Thomas 1 The town hall scheduled for February 18, 2021 was cancelled due to Prince Georges County Schools holding a town hall on the same day. Ms. Aikara informed the team that Mr. Thomas is available on March 4, 2021. The Committee will move forward with re-scheduling the town hall for March 4th. If March 4th doesn’t work, then March 8th will be the back-up date. School Supplies Elementary schools will be back in school on April 8th. Ms. Bernache and Ms. Barber will coordinate to ensure the school supplies are ordered and delivered to the schools before April 8th. Continue discussion of possible new initiatives for 2021 The Committee reviewed the following ideas that were discussed during the January meeting:  A database for tutoring  A list of volunteers willing to be guest readers for the schools  Create short videos and other forms of communications by partnering with the schools.  Provide a survey to key administrators to see what is needed during the pandemic.  Submit articles in the College Park Newspaper for events Ms. Daniel drafted a survey and will send to the Committee members to review and provide feedback. Ms. Powers suggested the EAC check on the process needed to review the survey prior to sending out to the principals. New Business Literacy Lab Ms. Mackie informed the EAC that she received a contact from the Literacy Lab that can provide an informational presentation on the program to the Committee. Adjournment Ms. Bernache adjourned the meeting at 8:48 p.m. 2
