Minutes Education Advisory Committee (EAC) August 16, 2021 Virtual Meeting Attendees Members Present Absent David Toledo, Dist 1 _X _ Vilay Senthep, Dist 1 _X _ Mary Daniel, Dist 2 _X _ Dawn Powers, Dist 2 _X _ Melissa Day, Dist 3 __X _ Rose Greene-Colby, Dist 3 _X _ Carolyn Bernache, Dist 4 _X _ Tessie Aikara, Dist 4 _X _ Daniel Levin, UMD _X _ Also Present Kiaisha Barber, Staff Liaison Maria Mackie, District 4 Council member Carleveva Thompson, Contract Secretary Call to Order Ms. Bernache called the meeting to order at 7:31 p.m. Old Business Approval of the July Meeting Minutes The Committee reviewed the meeting minutes from the July 19, 2021 meeting. Mr. Toledo motioned to approve the minutes as presented. Second by Ms. Aikara. 5 members in favor; 1 abstain; no opposed, 5-1-0. Essay Contest for Summer Camp Scholarships There was a suggestion to ask students to provide an essay on attending summer camp and have a prize drawing for winners with the best essay. The Committee will provide questions for the students to answer. Ms. Senthep motioned to contact all grant participants and ask for feedback on their summer experience and those that provide feedback will be entered into a prize drawing. Second by Ms. Bernache. All members in favor; no opposed. Mr. Toledo amended Ms. Senthep’s motion to include that three $100 gift cards will be provided to the winners of the prize drawing. Second by Ms. Powers. All members in favor; no opposed. Discuss PTA Membership Options 1 The Committee will gather more information and discuss at the next meeting. August 7th book distribution Ms. Bernache and Mr. Toledo thanked everyone for helping out with the book distribution. Mr. Toledo stated not as many cars came out to the Food Bank, so there are still a lot of books remaining. Tutoring Programs There was an update that the Literacy Lab pilot program at Hollywood Elementary would possibly be on hold. Ms. Mackie provided an update that the Literacy Lab is working with Hollywood Elementary to get the pilot program started in the fall. The Committee decided to hold off on discussing additional tutoring programs until the pilot program is resolved. Achievement Recognition Strategies The Committee discussed purchasing yard signs to recognize scholar students in College Park. Ms. Barber will work with Ms. Quinones to design yard signs. New Business Plans for College Park Day Ms. Barber provided an update that College Park Day will be changed to a virtual event and will possibly have a drive thru portion. The event is still scheduled on October 9, 2021. 2021 – 2022 Meeting Dates 2021 2022 September 20 January 24 October 18 February 28 November 15 March 21 No December meeting April 18 May 16 School Supplies Ms. Mackie informed the Committee of a school supply giveaway at Duvall Field on August 21, 2021. Adjournment Adjournment Ms. Bernache adjourned the meeting at 8:20 p.m. 2
