Call to Order
Ms. Bernache called the meeting to order at 7:33 p.m.
Old Business
Approval of the September Meeting Minutes
The Committee reviewed the meeting minutes from the September 20, 2021 meeting.
Ms. Aikara motioned to approve the minutes as presented. Second by Mr. Toledo. All
members in favor; no opposed. Motion carries, 7-0-0.
Discussion of Summer Camp Participant Survey
Ms. Barber provided an update that the survey was sent to the summer camp participants and 10
responses have been received. The Committee will enter the participants that responded into a
prize drawing and the winners will be selected during a closed meeting session.
Update on PTA/PTO membership stipends
Ms. Bernache sent letters to the elementary school principals regarding the PTA memberships
and received responses with contacts for University Park, Cherokee Lane and one additional
school. Ms. Bernache will reach out to inquire what the PTA costs will be so the Committee can
work on developing stipends for PTA memberships.
Update on Book Distribution Plans
Mr. Toledo informed the Committee there are books and journals available to distribute. Ms.
Greene-Colby suggested Good Neighbor Day as an option and it is scheduled on November 13th.
Ikea is having a food drive on November 13th and this can possibly be an option to have the book
distribution at the same time.
Ms. Bernache suggested to donate books and journals for Books in Hands, which is being held at
Berwyn Heights Elementary.
Update on Achievement Recognition Strategies
Ms. Quinones has designed the yard signs and estimated the cost to be no more than $20/sign.
Mr. Toledo made a motion to purchase 12 signs. Second by Ms. Aikara. All members in
favor; no opposed. Motion carries, 7-0-0.
New Business
EAC Education Grants
Ms. Barber stated that last year’s grant reports were emailed to the Committee for review. The
grant applications have been sent to the schools and the schools have confirmed receipt of the
applications. The deadline for the grant submission is November 10th. The EAC grants will be
on the City Council’s agenda on December 7th.
Ms. Bernache had a question for Greenbelt regarding the support for individual assignments.
Ms. Barber will contact Greenbelt and ask for clarification.
Ms. Greene-Colby provided feedback on how some schools provided pre and post results of
using the EAC grants in their grant reports and suggested that all schools provide this type of
information in the grant reports.
Parkdale has not participated in the EAC grants for the last couple of years. Ms. Bernache will
reach out to the school.
Buck Lodge did not apply for a grant last year, but are eligible to apply this year.
Closed Meeting Session
The Committee entered a closed meeting session at 8:00 p.m. to conduct the prize drawing and
select the winners from the participants that submitted responses to the summer camp survey.
Adjournment
Ms. Bernache adjourned the meeting at 8:05 p.m.
