Minutes Education Advisory Committee (EAC) May 16, 2022 Virtual Meeting Attendees Members Present Absent David Toledo, Dist 4 X Vilay Senthep, Dist 1 X Susan Miller, Dist 1 X Dawn Powers, Dist 2 X Melissa Day, Dist 3 X Carolyn Bernache, Dist 4 X Tessie Aikara, Dist 4 X Carson Peters, Dist 4 X Daniel Levin, UMD X Also Present Jax Chaudhry, Literacy Lab Kiaisha Barber, Staff Liaison Carleveva Thompson, Contract Secretary Call to Order Mr. Toledo called the meeting to order at 7:56 p.m. Old Business Approval of the April Meeting Minutes The Committee reviewed the meeting minutes from the April 18, 2022, meeting. Mr. Toledo motioned to approve the minutes as presented. Second by Ms. Aikara. All members in favor; no opposed. Motion carries, 8-0-0. Feedback on Maryland Day Book Distribution All books that were purchased were distributed. Parents and teachers commented on the good selection of books and the bi-lingual books and Spanish language books were very well perceived. There was a comment from a teacher that some Hispanic parents didn’t have books to read to their children at home. It was suggested to find a location to target those parents to distribute books to them. Ms. Bernache received an email from the College Park Food bank to see if the EAC is interested in distributing books at the food bank in the summer. Ms. Bernache motioned to conduct a summer book giveaway at the College Park food bank. Second by Ms. Senthep. All members in favor; no opposed. Motion carries, 8-0-0. Update on Achievement Recognition Ms. Miller dropped off the signs and the instructions to the schools. Ms. Barber received an email from Paint Branch to inform the Committee of how they will use the signs to recognize students. Hollywood, Paint Branch and Greenbelt Middle will receive their ceremonial checks at the City Council meeting on May 24th. The finalists for the “If I Was Mayor” contest will also be at the Council meeting to read their essays. Update on TECP tutoring proposal The TECP tutoring proposal will be presented to the City Council on May 24th. Remembrance for Rose Greene-Colby Mr. Toledo reached out to the program leader of the 4-H program but has not received a response. A suggestion was to conduct an essay contest and use a topic related to the 4-H program (head, hands, heart, health). Another suggestion was to order books and bookmarks that can fit in with the 4-H mission to distribute during College Park Day. The Committee will decide on a remembrance for Ms. Greene-Colby in the Fall. New Business Presentation on Literacy Lab pilot at Hollywood Elementary Ms. Chaudry provided a presentation to the Committee and gave an update on the pilot program at Hollywood. Two tutors started tutoring at Hollywood in the Fall and 29 students have been tutored this year. The data showed students progressing weekly with the tutoring program. A question was asked if there has been discussions on expanding the Literacy Lab within the City and possibly add Paint Branch as another school to offer tutoring. The Literacy Lab will continue with Hollywood for the rest of the year and may add other schools starting in the 2023- 2024 school year. Review of the EAC Grant Application The Committee reviewed the grant application and will add the Objectives and Key Results (OKRs) as an attachment to the application. Mr. Toledo motioned to add the OKRs with the grant applications when sending to schools. Second by Ms. Aikara. All members in favor; no opposed. Motion carries 8-0-0. Determine Chair and Co-chair The Committee voted for Ms. Bernache to remain Chair and Mr. Toledo will remain co- Chair. All members in favor; no opposed. Motion carries 8-0-0. Next Meeting Dates 2022 2023 August 15 January 23 September 19 February 27 October 17 March 20 November 21 April 17 No December meeting May 15 Adjournment Ms. Bernache adjourned the meeting at 9:01 p.m.
