Minutes Education Advisory Committee (EAC) August 15, 2022 Virtual Meeting Attendees Members Present Absent David Toledo, Dist 4 X Vilay Senthep, Dist 1 X Susan Miller, Dist 1 X Dawn Powers, Dist 2 X Melissa Day, Dist 3 X Carolyn Bernache, Dist 4 X Tessie Aikara, Dist 4 X Carson Peters, Dist 4 X Daniel Levin, UMD X Also Present Kiaisha Barber, Staff Liaison Maria Mackie, District 4 Councilmember Grace Delgado, Edgenuity/Imagine Learning Jane Quackenbush, TECP Angela Sun, TECP Carleveva Thompson, Contract Secretary Call to Order Ms. Bernache called the meeting to order at 7:32 p.m. Old Business Approval of the May Meeting Minutes The Committee reviewed the meeting minutes from the May 21, 2022, meeting. Ms. Aikara motioned to approve the minutes as presented. Second by Ms. Bernache. All members in favor; no opposed. Motion carries, 5-0-0. Feedback on Summer Food Bank Book Distribution The book distribution at the College Park food bank was cancelled. There were suggestions to have a book distribution during one of the City Movie Nights, the Hollywood Farmers Market, Back to School event, or the College Park Run. The Committee will plan to see if a book distribution can be held on the August 27th City Movie Night. Mr. Toledo motioned to purchase books for ages 0-12 for the August 27th City Movie Night. In the event the EAC does not distribute books during the movie night, the regular portioned budget for buying books will be used for College Park Day. Second by Ms. Bernache. All members in favor, no opposed. Motion carries, 5-0-0. Update on Achievement Recognition The schools have the recognition signs and it was suggested to send a reminder to the schools to ensure schools use the signs to recognize students. Update on The Every Child Project (TECP) tutoring proposal Ms. Sun and Ms. Quackenbush presented an update to the Committee on TECP and the new partnership with Greenbelt Middle School. The partnership will pilot 5 tutors with 10 students being tutored in Math and English. Remembrance for Rose Greene-Colby The Committee brainstormed ideas to include a remembrance for Ms. Greene-Colby. Ms. Barber suggested to have special book stickers created with a theme or quote to include in the books the Committee gives out as a remembrance for Ms. Greene-Colby. Mr. Toledo motioned that with Ms. Greene-Colby’s family blessing, the EAC will add a quote in memory of Rose Greene-Colby on the book stickers. Second by Ms. Aikara. All members in favor, no opposed. Motion carries 5-0-0. New Business Imagine Learning MyPath Ms. Delgado provided a presentation on My Path which is a program developed to help students that fall behind in learning. The Committee asked the following questions: 1. Is the website accessible to parents? There is not a guardian portal, only an administrative teacher portal. Parents can monitor progress through the student data on the website. 2. Does the website have ability to change into different languages? Yes, there is ability to change the language. 3. How often per week do you suggest tutoring and how long does each session take? At minimum 30 minutes/subject/week, but it is recommended for students to use 1-hour/ week/subject for the best growth. Fall School Supply Initiative Ms. Peters informed the Committee that the Office of Community Engagement at University of Maryland are interested in collaborating with the EAC on a school supply drive for the public school students (grades K-12) in College Park, possibly in February. Joint Effort with Aviation Museum Ms. Peters informed the Committee of outreach efforts that the College Park Aviation Museum has hosted such as the Latinas and Aviation Global Festival as well as various tours to engage students. The museum director is interested in potential collaboration with the EAC. Ms. Bernache suggested to invite the museum director to a future meeting to brainstorm ideas. Adjournment Mr. Toledo adjourned the meeting at 9:00 p.m.
