Minutes Education Advisory Committee (EAC) October 17, 2022 Virtual Meeting Attendees Members Present Absent David Toledo, Dist 4 X Vilay Senthep, Dist 1 X Susan Miller, Dist 1 X Dawn Powers, Dist 2 X Carolyn Bernache, Dist 4 X Tessie Aikara, Dist 4 X Carson Peters, Dist 4 X Daniel Levin, UMD X Also Present Kiaisha Barber, Staff Liaison Maria Mackie, District 4 Councilmember Carleveva Thompson, Contract Secretary Call to Order Ms. Bernache called the meeting to order at 7:36 p.m. Old Business Approval of the September Meeting Minutes The Committee reviewed the meeting minutes from the September 19, 2022, meeting. Ms. Miller motioned to approve the minutes as presented. Second by Ms. Aikara. All members in favor; no opposed. Motion carries, 5-0-0. Update on Achievement Recognition Strategies Ms. Bernache asked if there was an update from the schools on the recognition signs and no one has received any updates. Ms. Miller will contact the schools to get an update on the use of the recognition signs. Update on The Every Child Project (TECP) The Committee discussed inviting members of TECP to the next meeting to provide an update on the current pilot project. Update on Imagine Learning My Path Program Ms. Bernache will contact the presenters of the My Path program to present an overview of the program to the City Council at a future meeting. Update on College Park Day Book Giveaway The Committee commented that College Park Day was very busy and consistent. Most children found books they liked from the book selection. It was noted that high school students helped with the table set up and the book giveaway. The notebooks, journals, and pencils were also very popular. There is 1 box of books remaining from the giveaway. New Business EAC School Grants Berwyn Heights Elementary – $2,750 grant application for technology support in writing. Ms. Miller motioned to approve Berwyn Heights’ grant application. Second by Ms. Aikara. All members in favor, no opposed. Motion carries, 5-0-0. Paint Branch Elementary - $8,000 grant application for assemblies and field trips. The Committee noted pages were missing in the application. Ms. Barber will request the school to submit an updated application. Greenbelt Middle – $7,093 grant request for an afterschool food pantry program. Ms. Miller motioned to approve Greenbelt Middle’s grant application. Second by Ms. Bernache. All members in favor; no opposed. Motion carries, 5-0-0. Buck Lodge Middle – $2750 grant application for Positive Behavior Intervention & Supports Incentive Program. Ms. Powers motioned to approve Buck Lodge’s grant application. Second by Ms. Bernache. All members in favor, no opposed. Motion carries, 5-0-0. Greenbelt Middle and Hollywood Elementary submitted their grant report but have not submitted grant applications. School PTA funding Ms. Barber suggested for the Committee to discuss at a future meeting providing funding to support the PTA at schools. Adjournment Ms. Bernache adjourned the meeting at 8:15 p.m.
