Minutes Education Advisory Committee (EAC) February 26, 2024 Virtual Meeting Attendees Members Present Absent Carolyn Bernache, Dist 4 X Vilay Senthep, Dist 1 X Susan Miller, Dist 2 X Tessie Aikara, Dist 4 X Carson Peters, Dist 4 X Isaiah Warfield, Dist 2 X Geetha Rawat X Bianca Dacres X Vincent Alexis-Laona, Dist 3 X Also Present Kiaisha Barber, Staff Liaison Alyssa Simmons, Staff Maria Mackie, Dist 4 Councilmember Carleveva Thompson, Contract Secretary Call to Order Ms. Bernache called the meeting to order at 7:45 p.m. Old Business Approval of the January Meeting Minutes The Committee reviewed the meeting minutes from the January 22, 2024, meeting. Ms. Bernache motioned to approve the minutes as presented. Second by Mr. Warfield. All members in favor; no opposed. Motion carries, 6-0-0. Update on School Supply Request Ms. Barber provided an update that the school supplies were ordered and have been delivered to the schools. Hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes were also added to the supply order. Update on City Wide tutoring programs Ms. Simmons informed the Committee that a form was submitted to have a flyer made and printed to send to the schools. 30 students are enrolled in the program to date and Ms. Simmons is working with parents to ensure they are enrolled in the parent portal and answering questions on how to get started. Mostly middle school students are enrolled in the program, but there are a few elementary and high school students. Update on PTO/PTA engagement stipend Hollywood elementary submitted a PTO stipend application to use for providing light refreshments to parents during the school’s monthly morning PTO meetings for parents that are available to meet immediately after dropping off students at school. Ms. Senthep motioned to approve Hollywood’s PTO stipend application. Second by Ms. Aikara. All members in favor; no opposed. Motion carries, 6-0-0. Sample Children’s Calendar Mr. Warfield presented to the Committee a sample iCloud calendar that shows children events/activities that are planned in the City. It was suggested that the calendar can also include deadlines for submitting EAC grant applications and reminders to sign up for the City wide tutoring programs. The Committee will invite Ms. Quinones to a future EAC meeting to discuss the proposed children’s calendar. 2023 – 2024 EAC Grant Applications Hollywood Elementary– $8,000 for Programming for Parental Engagement and Involvement The Committee reviwed Hollywood’s grant application, but the Committee needs Hollywood to provide more explanation on how the money will be used and the impact that the program will bring to the school in order to approve the grant application. School Safety Task Force Councilmember Mackie informed the Committee that a task force has not been assembled yet, but the City Council will be meeting with Jonathan Briggs and a representative from Prince George’s County schools. New Business Maryland Day Maryland Day is scheduled on April 27, 2024, 10am-4pm and the EAC will have a table and distribute books. Ms. Barber informed the Committee there are 8-10 boxes of books remaining from College Park Day and asked for a volunteer to do an inventory. Ms. Bernache and Ms. Peters volunteered to do an inventory of the remaining books. Greenbelt Advisory Committee Ms. Bernache informed the Committee that she received an email from the Greenbelt Advisory Committee regarding a meeting they have scheduled on March 26th to discuss common issues and solutions with the EAC. Ms. Bernache will email the EAC members to see who is interested in attending the meeting. Adjournment Ms. Bernache adjourned the meeting at 8:35 p.m.
