Minutes Education Advisory Committee (EAC) January 22, 2024 Virtual Meeting Attendees Members Present Absent Carolyn Bernache, Dist 4 X Vilay Senthep, Dist 1 X Susan Miller, Dist 2 X Tessie Aikara, Dist 4 X Carson Peters, Dist 4 X Isaiah Warfield, Dist 2 X Geetha Rawat X Bianca Dacres X Also Present Kiaisha Barber, Staff Liaison Alyssa Simmons, Staff Maria Mackie, Dist 4 Councilmember Carleveva Thompson, Contract Secretary Call to Order Ms. Bernache called the meeting to order at 7:32 p.m. Old Business Approval of the November Meeting Minutes The Committee reviewed the meeting minutes from the November 20, 2023, meeting. Mr. Warfield motioned to approve the minutes as presented. Second by Ms. Senthep. All members in favor; no opposed. Motion carries, 6-0-0. Update on Cherokee Lane School Supply Request The Committee discussed sending school supplies to the schools in February. The following items were ordered for all schools last year:  2 cases #2 pencils  2 cases glue sticks  2 cases crayons  2 cases marble notebooks  1 case of hand sanitizer  1 case of Kleenex The Committee discussed adding a case of disinfect wipes to the order. Update on City Wide tutoring programs Ms. Simmons informed the Committee that students are currently being enrolled and getting registered for the program. Ms. Simmons attended a training session to learn more about the tutoring websites. 30 students have signed up for the program to date and majority of the students are elementary and middle school students. Update on PTO/PTA engagement stipend Ms. Simmons informed the Committee that a contact from University Park asked if the stipend was provided monthly or if the stipend was a one-time payment, and would the school be able to apply the stipend as a reimbursement for money already spent this school year. Ms. Simmons confirmed the stipend can be used as reimbursement. New Business Task Force for Bus Stop Safety Councilmember Mackie informed the EAC of a request to form a task force in the City to evaluate student safety going to and from school at bus stops. City staff are working to set up a meeting with Dr. House and Jonathan Briggs. Youth Advisory Committee Councilmember Mackie discussed with the EAC an idea of forming a youth advisory committee in the City. 2023 – 2024 EAC Grant Applications Buck Lodge – $2,750 for incentive gifts for the school’s ongoing Positive Behavior Intervention and Support Program. Ms. Aikara motioned to approve Buck Lodge’s grant application. Second by Mr. Warfield. All members in favor; no opposed. Motion carries, 6-0-0. University Park – $2,834.22 for an incentive program, Special Education – Behavioral Supports. Ms. Bernache motioned to approve University Park’s grant application. Second by Ms. Aikara. All members in favor; no opposed. Motion carries, 6-0-0. Cherokee Lane, Buck Lodge, University Park, College Park Academy, and Paint Branch grant applications will be on the February 6th City Council agenda for review and approval. Sample Children’s Event Calendar Tabled until the February meeting. Adjournment Ms. Bernache adjourned the meeting at 8:27 p.m.
