3. Food Bank of the Rockies - Kaye Lyssy
Kaye is the grant writer and has been there 3 years. Started mobile pantry -
continues to come to the parking lot twice a month. Serve over 300 families each
time. Food Bank of the Rockies has been in existence for 36 years. Distributed 53
Million pounds of food in last reporting year, typically distribute through partner
agencies. Warehouse is located at I-70/Havana. They receive food from
everywhere, handle and repackage for distribution to partner agencies. They also
purchase a fair amount of healthier food options.
With our funding they identified the partner agencies in Commerce City and
distributed to them equally. Agencies pick up the fresh items for delivery to their
groups the next day. Agencies pay for their food at a discounted rate of .05 cents a
pound.
They have plans to remodel their warehouse and increase capacity by 40% -
scheduled to start in January 2015.
One of their more popular programs is the backpack program (Totes of Hope) - kids
take food home on Friday to feed 3-4 people 3 or 4 meals week. They return the
backpacks on Monday and the process is repeated.
Just finished a big Hunger Study - this happens every 4 years. Kaye feels the study
isn't done often enough - better information would help address needs better. 1-in-7
Coloradoan’s are still hungry - over 40% are children.
They serve roughly 121,000 meals a day including all partner agencies. They had
enough volunteers last year to equate to 63 full time employees.

Fundraising - Individual donor base that is phenomenal plus corporate support has
grown nicely through the years. They host a couple of large events throughout the
year and have great partnerships with King Soopers and the Denver Broncos.
They also serve the entire state of Wyoming as well.
Questions:
Board members asked Kaye to send Leigh Ann a list of agencies in Commerce City
they supported with the funds.
What does an individual have to do to qualify?
Individuals get food - don't verify data. If they are not in the right zip code, they will be
served but encouraged to seek assistance in the right area the next time. They can
pick what they need to address any issues (allergies, religious preference, vegetarian
etc)
4. Catholic Charities - Diane Elio
Diane with them 10 years, closed in Commerce City 5 years ago but, still provide
rental assistance to Commerce City residents. QCF dollars are used for rental
assistance. Rental assistance funds are harder and harder to come by. In the future
Catholic Charities will have more funds to assist folks in Commerce City due to some
funding they are receiving from Adams County Residents. Also received funds from
FEMA for the 2013 flood - folks can reach out to them if they didn't already receive
assistance.
Catholic Charities is the #1 agency for 211 rental assistance. The appointment line is
answered for one hour in the morning and they get over 600 phone calls over 4
counties during that time. They schedule rental appointments the first 15 days of the
month. They provide utility assistance, victim assistance to Judicial District 17,
disaster recovery and rental assistance. They also have shelter services - rental
assistance keeps them from being in the shelters.
Questions- Does Catholic Charities have a Master Plan or future plans? They took
over a food pantry in Aurora (Little Flower) which serves Aurora and Montbello. The
CEO is interested in getting back into the food pantry business. They currently do not
serve Commerce City residents.
How do people qualify? Eviction notice, lease, current utility bill to confirm they live
where they say they live. They ask, “What is going on that keeps you from paying
the rent?” They do an assessor’s office check and/or contact landlord to verify
information. They pay for 30 days only and will provide referral information if
possible.
They have a development office and grant writing department with two people - they
handle the funding but they still have limited resources.
5. El Jardin Fundraiser
A letter was prepared and provided to El Jardin. Valerie cannot reach them for
confirmation of date. The proposed date was originally November 18th. It was
suggested to reschedule for January or February. Possible dates January 20 or
February 17. Valerie will continue to reach out to El Jardin for a confirmed date after
the first of the year.

6. Wine Tasting - Recap
Proceeds of $1,341.94
The board members requested addition information - # of tickets sold, # attended,
wine sale proceeds, did Buffalo Run charge what they originally said, etc.
Lessons Learned:
Price of event on the ticket
Print tickets/flyers earlier - Can city always provide printing for free?
Advertise deadline for ticket sales - advanced sales only
Newspaper article?
Location - may not be able to hold it there if volume increases along with silent
auction
Carol suggested we feature Colorado wines in the future
Carlotta suggested we schedule next wine tasting event now - October 1?? – Group
took no action yet
Robert suggested using the Octoberfest theme - provide wine/beer combo
Possibly reach out to Dick’s Sporting Goods Stadium to see about possibly hosting
the event if it gets larger
7. P&R Scholarship
Should a check be written to P&R for full amount or develop a process by which they
request the funds?
Sheryl to reach out to PR about timing of use of funds, reporting ability - report back
in November then vote to get them funds before end of year.
8. Golf Tournament Update
Leigh Ann has been exchanging emails with Andrew Amador and is working on
setting up a meeting at Buffalo Run within the next couple of weeks.
Robert is working on a loan with someone that does a golf ball drop - people
purchase a golf ball, he drops them from a helicopter onto a green and the person
closest to hole wins something. Robert will get details.
9. Review By-Laws
By-laws provided in the meeting weren’t the latest version, Sheryl or Leigh Ann will
email the correct by-laws to the group. Each member needs to review before next
meeting - make comments for sections that need to be amended.
10. Miscellaneous Discussion
Have some planned field trips/volunteer at some of the grantees locations
Communications info - Who is our contact? Julia or Michelle?
Ask Jodie about wine tasting pictures taken at the event, send to Leigh Ann for
