Mayor Lago introduced Agenda Item A-1 - Congratulations to Lieutenant William
Bronkhorst, recipient of the City of Coral Gables "Firefighter of the Year Award," for
2021 and Fire Chief Marco de la Rosa made the presentation. Fire Chief de la Rosa
stated that Lieutenant Bronkhorst was selected because he was charged with
re-engineering and re-planning the department’s Standard Operating Procedures
training and testing for the rank of driver/engineer and was given a vision and little
direction. He took ownership of the task and went through the same training and
certifications that was expected of his fellow firefighters and benched marked with
other departments that mirrored the way they do business. Chief de la Rosa
continued by saying that Lt. Bronkhorst’s commitment to excellence in bettering their
department is something he has built a legacy on, and it is because of these qualities
that he was selected as the “Firefighter of the Year” for 2021. Lieutenant Bronkhorst
thanked the City Commission, Fire Chief de la Rosa, the Command staff, the
firefighters from the Professional Standards Division and everyone involved with the
program and implementation of everything they did through training and testing, and
he is honored to accept the award.
