June, 2013
Call to Order Commission Chairperson Fred Fevold called the meeting to order at 7:02 p.m. Present were
Commission Members Eve Casserly, Laurie Goodrich, Marti Mount, David Thayer, and Fred
Fevold, and Director of Parks and Recreation, Sherri Proud. Citizens Adam Rose and Steve
Rose were also present.
Citizen Comments None
Approval of Minutes Commission Member Casserly made the motion to approve the meeting minutes from
May 20, 2013 meeting. Thayer seconded; unanimous approval.
Eagle Scout Project Adam Rose, Troop #207 presented a proposal for his Eagle Scout project. He would
like to put a flagpole and landscape bed at the new Camp Cardinal Trailhead at 719 Camp Cardinal Boulevard.
The flagpole would be lit so the flag could stay up at all times. The trailhead is next to Rotary Camp Park where
local scouts camp and do scouting activities. The addition of the flagpole would be an amenity for the area as
well as allow the Scouts to have a place to practice the flag ceremony while they are doing other activities at
Rotary Camp Park. The pole would be on either side of the new restroom and shelter facility, depending on
underground utilities. Rose reported he’d be seeking assistance from the parks department with proper location
and an auger to dig the hole. He would be looking for assistance also from an electrician to hook up the light.
Thayer asked if why it would be a US flag only that was flown. Proud reported that at all recreation facilities, the
US flag is the only flag flown but at other facilities the Iowa flag is also flown. Rose would look at whether a
State of Iowa flag might also fit for consideration. Commission approved the project to move forward.
Annual Report - Proud gave a summary of the annual report for 2012. The report highlighted activities under
the broader theme of “ Parks Grow Healthy Communities”. Copies are on file at the Coralville Recreation
Center and can be found on line at www.coralville.org/parksandrecreation.
