Coralville Parks and Recreation Commission Meeting Minutes
June 19, 2017
Call to Order Commission Chairperson Fred Fevold called the meeting to order at 7:06 p.m. Present were Commission
Members Eve Casserly, Alex Taylor, and David Thayer, Council Member Laurie Goodrich, and Parks and Recreation
Director Sherri Proud.
Citizen Comments No Comments
Approval of Minutes Commission Member Taylor made the motion to approve the meeting minutes from May 15, 2017
with spelling corrections as noted. Commission Member Thayer seconded the motion; unanimous approval.
Discussion of Agreement for Cyclocross Course – Parks and Recreation Director Proud shared that the course has
been seeded with plans to mow the terrace. Iowa City Cyclocross Club and Goosetown Racing will develop an
agreement with the City of Coralville. The City of Coralville will maintain the course doing the routine mowing. A site
manager will be determined with both entities who will assist in monitoring the site and traffic management.
Cyclocross members will promote the sport, riding events, and publicity regarding when the course is unavailable (rest
periods). When the course is ready, one promotion will include a weekly ride with technical skill clinics. The
cyclocross season is typically August through the spring thaw; from April to June, seeding and resting will occur. A
November cyclocross event is being considered by Iowa City Cyclocross Club. In addition to cyclocross, this site may
also be considered for cross country and cross country skiing.
Annual Report 2016 – The Annual Report was provided in written format with Proud sharing highlights of the Parks and
Recreation Departments. Proud noted that efforts were to focus on what are we doing, why are we doing, how are we
doing while focusing on the variety and culture of trends and activities. The theme was Celebrate Forward with
recognition of the bronze status related to Coralville becoming a Bicycle Friendly Community to receiving a Healthy
Forestry Stewardship Grant. Additional features included a rebooted monthly newsletter Refresh and Eagle Scout
projects. Facilities also included were the fifth anniversary of the Coralville Center for Performing Arts and record
breaking outings at Brown Deer Golf Course.
City Council Report Council Member Goodrich shared her appreciation to the Commission and the Staff for the work
they do throughout the year. A highlight of last Tuesday’s Council meeting including the recognition of Parks
Seasonal Staff Person Ashley Neece and three police officers with their lifesaving efforts utilizing CPR involving
Neece’s landlord.
Director Report Parks and Recreation Director Proud shared that summer challenges have included swim pool patrons
with a high number of rescues being required with people who misjudge their swimming abilities. The lifeguard staff
go through over thirty hours of training to prepare for the summer and continue training at bi-monthly staff meetings.
Featured summer events, the Fifth Street Social and 4th of July events were also announced.
Commission Member Casserly expressed concerns regarding the communication with Bridgewater representatives
being so far away in Florida and Minnesota. Grand Living is opening an office in Coralville this fall.
