Rose Garden
Eighteen pink double ‘Knockout’ roses were planted at the Port Watson/Church St. corner to replace the ones that
didn’t make it over this past winter’s extreme cold conditions. Comms. Dexter, Etherington, Batzing, and Barry
Batzing worked on the project. Vinca, wax begonias, and dusty millers were also planted. The DPW delivered a
bucket load of composted mulch to complete the garden.
Recent Tree Concerns/Notes
• Newly planted trees were righted and staked on Homer Ave., Prospect Terrace at the Cemetary, 62 Pendleton St., and
William St. following high wind and rain conditions.
• Comm. Dexter mulched the Kentucky coffee trees at the Cowance St. triangle after being nicked by a mower.
• A large silver maple fell across the median on Church St. following a July storm. The DPW cleaned it up quickly.
• The DPW will not remove a tree on Homer Ave. following a resident’s request, because it is not in poor enough
condition.
• A spring 2014-planted tree on Alvena Ave. was moved to 26 Cedar St. because the previous owner had signed the
tree application, but the new owner who just moved in did not want it. A stump was removed on the Cedar St.
property to make room for the previously requested tree.
• Comm. Dexter will be contacting Jim Maloney (National Grid) to look at City tree concerns.
• Comm. Dexter will talk to Jim Maloney about Nelson Tree Service removing the Waterworks spruce tree that is
lighted at the holidays each year. The tree has been slowly declining.
Other
Commission members need to be thinking about the spring 2015 tree selections, for ordering this September from the
nurseries.
NEXT MEETING: Thursday, August 14, 2014 – Mayor’s Conference Room at 4 p.m.
Respectfully,
Comm. Batzing
