CITY OF CORTLAND LANDSCAPE AND DESIGN COMMISSION MINUTES – April 12, 2019 Mayor’s Conference Room at 4:00 p.m. Members Present: Mike Dexter (Chair), Anne Doyle, Paul Paradine, Diane Batzing Consultant Arborist: Jim Maloney Approve Minutes: Comm. Doyle, 1st; Comm. Paradine, 2nd May 2019 Tree Planting Program • Comm. Batzing presented the finalized planting list and noted the waiting list. • We are pleased that Jim Maloney/National Grid will be removing the final six trees on the Church St. median which will allow us to go ahead with replacing the very declining spruce trees. • Our grant budget will allow us to have the stumps removed. • Our budget will also allow us to purchase twenty 6’-7’concolor fir trees rather than the fifteen trees as planned. After viewing photos of the beautiful looking trees, we decided to purchase them from Aspinall’s Nursery in Chittenango for $159 per tree. • We still have a few trees that will require removal before planting at these sites. • Comm. Dexter will ask Nic Dovi to start the UFPO process. Comms. Dexter and Batzing will mark the tree sites, with property owner input. Recent Tree Concerns/Notes • National Grid will be removing additional flowering pear trees on W. Main St. for underwire replacements. Several were removed and replaced in 2013. • The property owner at 50 Owego St. would like his tree removed. Other • The Knockout rose garden at Church/Port Watson Sts. has been cleaned up and pruned. • Our twelfth year Tree City USA materials have been received, and the 2018 tag has been affixed to the City Hall plaque. • Jim Maloney will print the 2020 tree flyers for the community program. Funding for May 2020 will be provided by the 10,000 Trees and Growing monies. An additional 25 trees will be funded by a USDA/DEC Chesapeake Bay grant.
