CITY OF CORTLAND LANDSCAPE AND DESIGN COMMISSION MINUTES – June 13, 2019 Mayor’s Conference Room at 4:00 p.m. Members Present: Mike Dexter (Chair), Anne Doyle, Paul Paradine, Diane Batzing Approve Minutes: Comm. Dexter, 1st; Comm. Paradine, 2nd May 2019 Tree Planting Program Review • 75 trees were planted, including 20 concolor firs on the Church St. median, 11 on the Cortland School District side of Pendleton St., and 15 on the Cortland Housing Authority side of Pendleton St. • 100 stakes were used. • All but $36 of the DEC grant was spent on the two-year program. • 11Cortland National Honor Society members participated in the May 4th planting of four trees on the District’s Pendleton St. property as part of the grant education component. Thoma Development sent letters of appreciation to each student. • Sewer Dept. backhoe operator Larry Hill donated $100 to the tree program. • Paul Bunyan Products donated 6 yard of mulch to this year’s program. Recent Tree Concerns/Notes • Mower damage has resulted in the death of two E. Court St. trees on the KIK Custom Products right-of-way. • The newly planted ginkgo at the corner of Prospect Terr. and James St. was uprooted before the SUNY graduation; Comm. Dexter and Jim Maloney replanted and staked the tree. 2020 Tree Planting Planning • The cortland.org website will be updated with the new application form and tree descriptions and photos. • Tree site focus for the Chesapeake Bay project will be Parker Ave., Greenbush St. at the County Office Bldg., and the Cortland School District. Twenty-five trees are planned for this project. • Jim Maloney has printed color applications for the Cortland Tree Program, for which the National Grid 10,000 Trees and Growing Program will be providing funding next May. Other • The Port Watson St./Church St. rose garden has been weeded and mulched. • Cortland Youth Bureau director John McNerney provided two summer workers to assist Comm. Dexter in mulching the 20 fir trees on Church St. • Comm. Paradine reported that NYSEG recently spent $2,000 to clean up the Charles St. brownfield site this spring. Cayuga Landscape completed the work, with $600 being spent on new plants. A total of nearly $60,000 has been provided by NYSEG for this space!
