CITY OF CORTLAND LANDSCAPE AND DESIGN COMMISSION MINUTES – September 11, 2019 Mayor’s Conference Room at 4:00 p.m. Members Present: Mike Dexter (Chair), Theresa Quail, Anne Doyle, Melinda Shimizu, Diane Batzing Consulting Arborist –Jim Maloney Approve Minutes: Comm. Quail, 1st; Comm. Shimizu, 2nd May 2020 Tree Planting Program Planning • Comms. Dexter and Batzing met with Eric Mulvihill and the county grounds director to discuss planting trees on the Greenbush St. right-of-way. A total of 17 ‘Imperial’ honeylocusts and American hornbeams were paced out along the parking lot. Two ‘Triumph’ elms are planned for the parking lot area at Central and Greenbush Streets. An additional elm will be planted at 22 W. Court St. (911 call center). Recent Tree Concerns/Notes • A concolor fir planted this May has been removed by the water department; it struggled since the day it was planted in May. • Comm. Dexter and Mayor Tobin met to evaluate the Church St. fir trees that some residents feel are a visual hazard to vehicles at the William St. intersection. • Jim Maloney and Comm. Dexter will check a W. Court St. tree that the resident says is raising the sidewalk. Since being planted just a few years ago, that is probably unlikely. • Jim Maloney evaluated a memorial hackberry planted at the Waterworks and says it is dying due to a canker. We will replace it next spring. • A tree on Sunset Dr. is dying due to encircling roots; it is on the resident’s property and will have it removed. • A resident on Banks St. removed a right-of-way tree planted in 1992. • A tree on Duane St. may need to be removed. • A ginkgo planted on Pomeroy St. is dead due to obvious mower/string trimmer damage at the base. We will replace it for the new owner. Other • The Church St./Port Watson St. rose garden has been weeded and is thriving. • Comm. Batzing and Rich Cunningham will attend a NY DEC grant information session in Dewitt on September 12th. • An out of state resident has inquired about planting a memorial tree for a Cortland resident who died recently. Next Meeting: October 9, 2019 – 4 p.m. – Mayor’s Conference Room Respectfully, Comm.
