CITY OF CORTLAND LANDSCAPE AND DESIGN COMMISSION Minutes - November 6, 2020 33 Cedar St. Cortland at 4:00 p.m. Members Present: Mike Dexter (Chair), Theresa Quail, Melinda Shimizu, Diane Batzing Arbor Day Proclamation: Comm. Dexter read the annual Arbor Day Proclamation at 33 Cedar St. today. Because of the Covid-19 restrictions this year, a proclamation was optional, but ideal outdoor conditions, with masks and social distancing, made this possible. The Cedar St. tree recipient was present for the Proclamation. Approve September 9, 2020 Minutes: Comm. Shimizu, 1st; Comm. Dexter, 2nd NYS Urban and Community Forestry Council Grant Opportunity Our application for $1000 to plant a golden rain tree at the Waterworks was denied. DEC Urban and Community Forestry Council Grant Status Our grant for a citywide tree inventory was denied. Until the City of Cortland has a current inventory, we will be ineligible to apply for tree planting funding through the NYSDEC. National Grid Tree Planting Updates • Nineteen trees were planted: 1 tree was staked; a dead concolor tree on the Church St. median was replaced by a tree at the Church St./William St. intersection. • A tree scheduled to be planted at 33 James St. was planted at 98 W. Main St. due to gas line interference. Other • Comm. Batzing will send the list of trees to be removed by the DPW. • Schichtel’s has acknowledged the order for DEC and National Grid trees to be planted next spring. • Comm. Shimizu suggested that perhaps a certified arborist would be able to approve a citywide inventory, with her GIS class at SUNY and Prof. Steve Broyles’s class. Comm.
