MINUTES ENVIRONMENTAL ADVISORY BOARD JUNE 14, 2024 MEMBERS PRESENT: Sarah McKnight, Sarah Richard, Ellenmarie Wahlrab, Brian Williams, Hillery Spearman MEMBERS ABSENT: Katherine Arnett, Niani Brown, Grace Dietsch, Scott Eardley, STAFF PRESENT: Eric Borth, Paul Fleischman, Felicia Graham, Keith Klein, Chris Lipson, Meg Maloney, Carolyn Moore, John Musto, Mike Squire, Kathleen Turner OTHERS PRESENT: Corey Frolik – Dayton Daily News Walt Hibner – CenterPoint Energy Cassie Austil – UD Student Anne Majka – UD Student Shannon Dennermann – UD Student Lia Schmidt – UD Student Brennan Geiger – UD Student Savannah Valesquez - Citizen Assistant Chairperson, Sarah Richard called the meeting to order at 12:04 p.m. Citizen’s Concerns: None Approval of the April 2024 Minutes: Vice Chairperson Sarah Richard called for a motion to approve the April 2024 Minutes. Brian Williams made a motion to accept the minutes; Ellenmarie Wahlrab seconded the motion. A vote was taken, and the minutes were accepted. Staff Items: A presentation on the Water website will be given at the next meeting due to the AV system being down. Drilling monitors in the North Miami Well Fields. Inspections are going well. We are working with Ohio EPA on the former Carco site, Tetratec won the contract. Also working with Ohio EPA on the Gayston site , TRC is the contractor. They will be focused on remediations, like injections. They are doing more than just treating pump and treatment issues for Water. Shannon Meadows is the new Harrison Township representative for the Source Water Protection Board. The Risk Assessor position is open. We will be meeting with Ohio EPA next week concerning Wright Patterson Air Force Base. Ohio EPA geologists toured the well fields. There have been complaints of stormwater drain discharges and illegal dumping. There was a tire fire in Old North Dayton, and we are working with Ohio EPA to remove the tires. The next Clean Sweep of the Great Miami River is July 19. The Adopt-a-Storm Drain program has had naming contests. A flyer was provided. Five Rivers MetroParks and Environmental are working on a nine-point implementation plan regarding Wolf Creek for seeking grants. A public forum will be held. Sustainability: Tim Pritchard will temporarily be joining the Sustainability team to help with wastewater projects, etc. He will be attending EAB meetings again. Many grants have been won, some of them are: prepping and allowing solar panels for low-income houses, and two million dollar grant for tree canopy plan. Grants that are being applied for are: Gap funding, composting grant with Montgomery County, and installing solar panels on the Old North Dayton Police Station. Also being applied for are help with applying for electric vehicles and EV charges and tax returns. Working to create “resilience places” (where people can shelter during disasters). The Behr remediation data will be released in the fall. There will be a Valleycrest Road party in July or August. Sustainability has been working with the City of Dayton Green Team on various projects. There is no update on the Knoop Prairie. ENVIRONMENTAL ADVISORY BOARD -2- June 14, 2024 Economic Development: Working on a Pace direct program with Sustainability for a revolving loan fund for energy efficiency. Water Committee: Meeting needs to be rescheduled. Law: Some nation-wide cases were won concerning PFAS. They are working on WPAFB PFAS issues. The goal is not having citizens pay for contamination clean-up. Public Health, Dayton and Montgomery County: No update. Solid Waste District: There will be a large recycling event with Goodwill and Cox Media on June 22nd. The next Styrofoam collection event is July 13th at UD Arena. A Recycling Master Class is being offered in collaboration with Five Rivers MetroParks. Registration is open and attendance is free. Waste Ambassadors are still needed for the Dayton Dragons game on August 25th. Five Rivers MetroParks: No update. University of Dayton: The year-end move out was successful and preparations for the move-in plan are being made. Their program is growing. MVRPC: No update. Community Outreach: No update.
