Eleanor stated that she wanted to point it out that the Senior Center has not added any new staff for a long time. Eleanor said she calls on Stephanie to represent the Senior Services because she is an advocate for the senior center. She asked Stephanie to please look at what is done at the Senior Services and be very cognizant of the fact that staff has not been added to the budget. Eleanor also asked Stephanie look at what the Advisory Board and Ways & Means Committee does and the ingenuity of the people already raising money. This is a saving to the City. Stephanie asked why it is a savings. Eleanor said because it costs the City more or any other entity more if people are in nursing homes and do not have activities so they are out running around having accidents, everything increases. Studies will show that those who are in activities maintain in their homes longer and those are the things that save the city money. Eleanor said she did look up and the census shows that 30% of the people in the city of Derby are 50 and above and she was just thinking about people who vote, we have an awfully large percentage of voters. Eleanor stated that maybe it is not that we are saving the city money but that we are bringing money in and she didn’t know how many families bring their parents here because Derby is a nice place to live. The big reason they bring their families here is because there are activities at the senior center and the seniors are real proud of our senior center and know this brings different people here. Eleanor stated that is the way we produce money for the City of Derby which is the same to her. Eleanor also stated that the seniors in the City of Derby are part of the total society and we have to admit serving people is a big thing. Stephanie stated that is totally what this is all about serving people. Stephanie stated she appreciated all that the Advisory Board provides for the Senior Center. Marilyn Newkold mentioned that when the Senior Center started, which was called the Golden Agers, the City Council was very supportive. Eleanor said that during the National Accreditation process, they could not believe we do what we do with the small staff that 3 is at the senior center. If they talk about cutting anything from the senior center I must remind you that we have been looked at all over the state as a prototype, an example for other senior centers to strive for. We have brought a lot of attention to the City of Derby in doing that. Eleanor also stated that the seniors are contributing on their end by paying property tax. Stephanie stated that senior centers in Dodge City and Garden City are not supported with tax dollars like here. Stephanie stated she hoped her information was helpful. Eleanor thanked Stephanie for the information and Duane Day stated he understood it better now. Dee Williams thanked Stephanie for her explanation of the Budget.
