APPROVED MINUTES SENIOR CENTER ADVISORY BOARD 10:05 AM September 6th, 2017 CITY OF DERBY ROLL CALL GERALD BROWNLEE JANICE NEAGLE JIM BURGESS DIANE SCHMITT, TREASURER TOM DAVIDSON, SECRETARY - ABSENT ELEANOR UNDERWOOD, CHAIR DUANE DAY, VICE CHAIR CITY STAFF TED AUSTIN - ABSENT BREANNA MONK KIM HART Public Forum Agenda Item #1 RE: Lisa Callahan – Part time Administrative Assistant BreAnna Monk introduced the new part time Administrative Assistant Lisa Callahan to the Board members. RE: County Funding Jim Burgess let the Board members know that at 10:00 AM Thursday September 14th he will lead a meeting with five other senior centers regarding additional County funding. Jim stated County Commissioner Jim Howell will be at the meeting and possibly another County Commissioner. This meeting is open but is intended for the head of the five centers. Eleanor Underwood asked Jim Burgess to report back on the meeting to the Board at the October 4th Advisory Board meeting. Jim stated the Derby Senior Center will not receive any additional funding they are there in support of the other senior centers. Jim stated there will be a County Commission meeting on September 27th, he encouraged the Board to attend this meeting. RE: Wii Beginning Classes Duane Day volunteered to teach beginning Wii. BreAnna suggested he speak with Laura Friend the Activity Coordinator. RE: Open House BreAnna Monk stated she wants to have an Open House to show all the activities going on at the Derby Senior on an evening game night. Discussion was held and it was suggested to have it on 1 a TNT (Tuesday Nite Together) /Community Dance night. BreAnna said there would be tours at the Open House and it be held from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Janice Neagle suggested there be exercise classes going on. BreAnna said that the purpose is to show how active our seniors and our center is. RE: Tax Appointments Jim Burgess stated AARP Tax service will be offering Tax appointments on Tuesday and Wednesdays in 2018. Jim Burgess said they still need at least one more tax volunteer to help with the taxes. BreAnna said she has someone in mind that is retired from the Internal Revenue Service and will have her get in touch with Don Gerber if she is interested. BreAnna stated the Advisory Board meetings will be held in the Sunflower Room, January through April, during tax season. RE: Diabetes Class BreAnna Monk let the Board know the Lions Club made a donation for this class. The first class will be held October 17th. BreAnna is getting supplies ready for the class and she was able to get the monitors donated. BreAnna has also lined up a Dietician and is working on a getting a Certified Instructor. BreAnna said the class will last 2 to 3 hours. Discussion was held. RE: Senior CPR Janice Neagle suggested the senior center contact the Red Cross and offer a CPR classes for seniors. Agenda Item #2 RE: Advisory Board Fund Report August 2017 Diane Schmitt gave the Advisory Board Fund Report for August 2017. The expenses for August totaled $1,172.36 and the income was $294 with an ending balance of $18,203.18. MOTION: Jim Burgess moved to approve and file the Advisory Board Fund Report for August 2017. Gerald Brownlee seconded. VOTE: 5 yea, motion carried Agenda Item #3 RE: Approve August 16th, 2017 Minutes MOTION: Gerald Brownlee made a motion to approve the minutes from the August 16th, 2017 Derby Senior Center Advisory Board meetings. Janice Neagle seconded. VOTE: 5 yea, motion carried 2 Agenda Item #4 RE: Approve August 2017 Derby Dash Scholarship Report BreAnna Monk gave the report for the August 2017 Derby Dash Scholarship Report. $0 used in scholarships which leaves an ending balance of $319. MOTION: Diane Schmitt made a motion to approve the Derby Dash Scholarship Report for August 2017. Gerald Brownlee seconded. VOTE: 5 yea, motion carried Agenda Item #5 RE: Comment Cards BreAnna Monk read the only comment / suggestion that was submitted: The suggestion was to have a variety of meat items instead of just chicken at Cover Dish. Discussion was held. BreAnna gave the Board several options for mini sandwiches, pinwheels, soups or Hog-Wild turkey slices, ham slices or pulled pork. BreAnna suggested serving different meats on the Holiday months. Eleanor Underwood suggested maybe a different meat could be served every quarter. Discussion was held. Duane Day suggested this suggestion be tabled until the October Advisory Board meeting. Agenda Item #6 RE: Chicken Duty – Janice Neagle will pick up the chicken for Covered Dish in October. Agenda Item #7 RE: Center Updates BreAnna Monk let the Board know that 4 full rolls and an additional 4 1/2’ of rubber flooring will need to be purchased from Atwood’s. BreAnna let the Board know the warranty on the product is just the 60-day store return warranty. BreAnna stated cleaning the product is easy and can be done like any other floor with basic sweeping and moping. BreAnna also said installation will cost $450. MOTION: Jim Burgess made a motion that the Board approve the purchase and installation of rubber flooring totaling $1,250. Duane Day seconded. VOTE: 5 yea, motion carried 3 Agenda Item #8 RE: Can We Talk Outcome BreAnna Monk let the Board know on July 13th the Derby Senior Center hosted a Can We Talk – Senior Center. BreAnna thanked Duane Day, Gerald Brownlee and Janice Neagle for attending. BreAnna asked the Board to review the suggestion list and discussion was held. It was decided to discuss these suggestions in the October Advisory Board meeting. One of the suggestions was to find an exercise instructor. BreAnna let the Board know she has Instructors from WSU for the 8:10 AM and 9:10 AM exercise classes. Agenda Item #9 RE: County Annual Report BreAnna said that on June 19th Stacy Nilles from the County came in and did the Annual Audit Report to see if we are on track and programming is right where it needs to be. On August 18th BreAnna received a letter from Stacy Nilles to say she conducted a Mill Levy Program Assessment on June 19th and there were no corrective actions noted. BreAnna said Jim Burgess And Ted Austin sat in on the meeting and were very helpful. Jim Burgess added that there were two other Department on Aging Board members in the meeting. Discussion was held. ADJOURNMENT MOTION: Jim Burgess made a motion for adjournment. Duane Day seconded. VOTE: 5 yea, motion carried.
