APPROVED MINUTES SENIOR CENTER ADVISORY BOARD 10:22 AM November 1st, 2017 CITY OF DERBY ROLL CALL GERALD BROWNLEE JANICE NEAGLE JIM BURGESS DIANE SCHMITT, TREASURER TOM DAVIDSON, SECRETARY ELEANOR UNDERWOOD, CHAIR DUANE DAY, VICE CHAIR CITY STAFF TED AUSTIN - ABSENT BREANNA MONK KIM HART Public Forum Agenda Item #1 Open Forum – Administrator’s comments – Board comments RE: Fall Festival Signs BreAnna Monk explained to the Board a permit is required for signs over 3ft. x 3ft so she has taken care of the permit. RE: Operation Holiday BreAnna let the Board know Operation Holiday will be taking applications on November 13th and 17th at the DRC. BreAnna said the Community Quilters here at the Derby Senior Center have 52 adult quilts and 12 baby quilts that they will be donating to Operation Holiday this exceeds the 50- quilt request. RE: Veterans Quilts BreAnna said the next project the Community Quilters is the Veterans Quilts. There is a quilt hanging in the DSC and anyone who is a Veteran and has not received a quilt can sign up to receive one. RE: Diabetes 101 BreAnna let the Board know this class was created by her and the Lions Club sponsored the event. BreAnna said it was a very successful class in which the participants had blood tested and were given monitors, food, coolers and cooling packs. BreAnna is submitting an application with the NCOA to let them know about the class nationally if recognized there will be a NCOA guide and the senior center will be put up nationally for a program on Diabetes. American Family Insurance 1 said they would sponsor a second class and they want to have at least 30 or 40 participants and they will provide the volunteers needed to run the class. RE: Can We Talk BreAnna thanked Jim Burgess for running the October Can We Talk program on Sedgwick County Senior Center Funding. BreAnna and the Board said it was very informative. Discussion was held. RE: Department on Aging BreAnna let the Board know the Department on Aging is moving on December 5th they will be located on the 4th and 5th floor of the Ronald Reagan Building. They will be fully accessible on December 12th. RE: Eye Center BreAnna said the Eye Center is hosting an event to help children with disabilities to learn how to ride bikes. They need volunteers and BreAnna will pass this information to the Volunteer Coordinators. RE: Independent Resource Center BreAnna said the Independent Resource Center is needing equipment and are asking for donated items. They will also start a dental clinic for patrons. Jim Burgess stated there is limited funding for this program. Discussion was held. Agenda Item #2 RE: Advisory Board Fund Report October 2017 Diane Schmitt gave the Advisory Board Fund Report for October 2017. The expenses for October totaled $1,739.47 and the income was $320 with an ending balance of $16,560.69 MOTION: Jim Burgess moved to approve and file the Advisory Board Fund Report for October 2017. Gerald Brownlee seconded. VOTE: 6 yea, motion carried Agenda Item #3 RE: Approve October 6, 2017 Minutes MOTION: Diane Schmitt made a motion to approve the minutes from the October 4th, 2017 Derby Senior Center Advisory Board meetings. Janice Neagle seconded. 2 VOTE: 6 yea, motion carried Agenda Item #4 RE: Approve October 2017 Derby Dash Scholarship Report BreAnna Monk gave the report for the October 2017 Derby Dash Scholarship Report. $0 used in scholarships which leaves an ending balance of $319. MOTION: Duane Day made a motion to approve the Derby Dash Scholarship Report for October 2017. Tom Davidson seconded. VOTE: 6 yea, motion carried Agenda Item #5 RE: TNT BreAnna Monk gave the TNT report and menu for October 2017, the meal was Zombie Eyeballs and there was a total of 67 served. The was a total profit of $202.51. Agenda Item #6 RE: Comment Cards BreAnna Monk let the Board know there were no suggestions or comments this month. Discussion was held. Agenda Item #7 RE: Covered Dish – Eleanor Underwood will pick up the meat from Hog Wild. Agenda Item #8 RE: Center Updates – Exercise Equipment BreAnna Monk let the Board know that she has noticed an increased use of the fitness room since the rubber flooring has been put down and she has been approached to get a rowing machine. BreAnna asked the Board for approval to purchase a rowing machine for up to the price of to $1,500 to $2,000. Discussion was held. MOTION: Jim Burgess made a motion for BreAnna to prepare a proposal and then call a special meeting to discuss the purchase of equipment. Tom Davidson seconded. VOTE: 6 yea, motion carried. 3 Agenda Item #9 RE: Can We Talk BreAnna Monk said the November 9th Can We Talk is Outsmarting Investment Fraud. BreAnna said it will be presented by the Office of the Kansas Securities Commissioner. BreAnna said she saw the presentation at the Salina Senior Fair and it was very informative.
