UNAPPROVED MINUTES SENIOR CENTER ADVISORY BOARD 10:05 AM January 3rd, 2018 CITY OF DERBY ROLL CALL GERALD BROWNLEE JANICE NEAGLE JIM BURGESS DIANE SCHMITT, TREASURER TOM DAVIDSON, SECRETARY ELEANOR UNDERWOOD, CHAIR DUANE DAY, VICE CHAIR CITY STAFF TED AUSTIN - ABSENT BREANNA MONK KIM HART Public Forum Agenda Item #1 Open Forum – Administrator’s comments – Board comments RE: Active Aging Tax Date Error Jim Burgess let BreAnna know Active Aging Publication has the incorrect days for Tax Preparation at the Derby Senior Center. BreAnna said she sent this information to the CPAAA because they had the wrong information also. BreAnna said Laura will contact them to be sure this is corrected. RE: TNT Leftovers Diane Schmitt asked if the TNT leftovers were being sold. BreAnna said it depended on what the meal was and this month they gave the leftovers away free. RE: Prime Times Duane Day said his parents and sister are still not receiving the Prime Times Newsletter. They have verified their addresses and still do not receive it. BreAnna suggested they check with their Post Office and she will have Laura check the list she sends to the Informer. RE: Austin Room Diane Schmitt asked BreAnna about the Austin Room being left in a mess and the tables are being left out. Seniors are having to move them out of the way for exercise class when the maintenance men cannot get to it in time. Discussion was held and it was suggested the room always be put back in the same condition and arrangement it is found in. 1 RE: Intercultural: Native American Eleanor Underwood asked BreAnna if it is necessary to sign up for this program. BreAnna let the Board know they do need to sign up and it is a program set up to bring diversity to the senior center. To look inside of other people’s culture along with food from that culture. There is a $3 fee and it is on January 25th at 4:00 PM. BreAnna said each month with be a different country and culture. RE: Sesquicentennial BreAnna let the Board know she was approached to see if the Senior Center wanted a space on the Sesquicentennial Monopoly Game Board. The spot called Property Tax is $200. To get a spot in the booklet is $200 and to be on a deck of cards is $100 for a total of $500 to be a part of this Commemorative celebration. Discussion was held. BreAnna said the Chamber is going to give the Senior Center two free games. MOTION: Duane Day moved the Board sponsor the Sesquicentennial by purchasing a spot on the Monopoly game for $200, deck of cards for $200 and being listed in the booklet for $100. Tom Davidson seconded. VOTE: 6 yea, motion carried RE: Community Garden Janice Neagle said she had been approached about starting a Community Garden. BreAnna said this is a great idea and there is one in Oaklawn. They charge for the space and it was offered to the senior center before and she did not get a big response. BreAnna said this will require a lot of volunteers. BreAnna said she will put it in her article in the Prime Times and she will also suggest a Garden Club. Agenda Item #2 RE: Advisory Board Fund Report December 5th, 2017. Diane Schmitt gave the Advisory Board Fund Report for December 2017. The expenses for totaled $314.19 and the income was $315. with an ending balance of $17,119.40. MOTION: Jim Burgess moved to approve and file the Advisory Board Fund Report for December 2017. Diane Schmitt seconded. VOTE: 6 yea, motion carried Agenda Item #3 RE: Approve December 5th, 2017 Minutes 2 MOTION: Gerald Brownlee made a motion to approve the minutes from the December 5th, 2017 Derby Senior Center Advisory Board meetings. Diane Schmitt seconded. VOTE: 6 yea, motion carried Agenda Item #4 RE: Approve December 2017 Derby Dash Scholarship Report BreAnna Monk gave the report for the December 2017 Derby Dash Scholarship Report. $48 used in December for scholarships which leaves an ending balance of $247. BreAnna let the Board know that the Derby Dash has a returning scholarship rider and there are a couple children that need a scholarship through March to ride to school. BreAnna said donations are needed for scholarships. MOTION: Gerald Brownlee made a motion to approve the Derby Dash Scholarship Report for December 2017. Duane Day seconded. VOTE: 6 yea, motion carried Agenda Item #5 RE: TNT BreAnna Monk gave the TNT report and menu for December 2017, the meal was Sliced Smoked Turkey and there was a total of 70 served. The was a total profit of -$20.10. BreAnna said this not a big loss since it was a special Holiday meal. Agenda Item #6 RE: Comment Cards BreAnna Monk and the Board decided to review the Comment Cards at the January 3rd Advisory Board Meeting. BreAnna Monk reviewed all the suggestion and comment cards with the Board. Rowing Machine - Several requests were recently met with the purchase of the new rowing machine and weight bench. Discussion was held and BreAnna said she is working with the DRC on possible new programs. Police Protection - Another suggestion was to meet with the Police to review ways for protection when out and about and BreAnna thought this would be a good topic for the Can We Talk Program. 3 Tree removal – It was suggested for the City to remove the pine trees that drop sap on cars, as well as the crab apple tree that makes a mess on the sidewalk. The Board decided to write a letter to the City Council to support BreAnna and the complaints about the trees. Senior Wednesdays - A suggestion was that the Senior Center start attending the Senior Wednesday Programs in Wichita. BreAnna said she will bring that up to Laura Friend the Activity Coordinator. Movie Days – It was suggested that the Senior Center have Movie Days. BreAnna said she will speak to Laura about this idea. Agenda Item #7 RE: Covered Dish – Duane Day volunteered to pick up the Chicken for the Cover Dish Lunch since Jim Burgess is not able to pick it up. Kim passed out a new Chicken Duty list to the Board. Agenda Item #8 RE: Center Updates BreAnna said that the Rowing Machine and Weight Bench have been set up and they are being used daily. Agenda Item #9 RE: Can We Talk BreAnna Monk said the January 11th Can We Talk is Caring Transitions. BreAnna said Caring Transition is going to walk you through the how to make the transition from a big home to a smaller one for you or your loved one. Agenda Item #10 RE: Board Re-Appointments BreAnna Monk said Hillary Lawrence let her know that Jim Burgess, Eleanor Underwood and Diane Schmitt are up for reappointment. Discussion was held and all three of them said they were interested in remaining on the Senior Center Advisory Board. BreAnna said she will get the applications and give them to Jim, Eleanor and Diane to complete and turn back in. ADJOURNMENT MOTION: Gerald Brownlee made a motion for adjournment. Janice Neagle seconded.
