APPROVED MINUTES SENIOR CENTER ADVISORY BOARD CITY OF DERBY September 12, 2018, 9:15 AM ROLL CALL GERALD BROWNLEE JANICE NEAGLE JIM BURGESS DIANE SCHMITT, TREASURER TOM DAVIDSON, SECRETARY ELEANOR UNDERWOOD, CHAIR DUANE DAY, VICE CHAIR CITY STAFF TED AUSTIN - ABSENT BREANNA MONK KIM HART Public Forum Agenda Item #1 RE: Volunteer Reception BreAnna Monk said she has been working on the Volunteer Reception and it will be Monday December 10th at noon at the Madison Avenue Venue. Cracker Barrell will be catering the meal. RE: SHICK BreAnna said October 15th SHICK will start up. BreAnna said she listed all of the 2019 Medicare updates and she also and the SHICK updates in BreAnna’s Corner in the Prime Times Newsletter. RE: Sedgwick County Budget Jim Burgess stated they made the paper several times in regards to Senior Center funding. Jim said for the first time since 2006 there are additional funds for Senior Services. $100k additional funds will be allocated for Senior Services in general. Discussion was held. Eleanor Underwood thanked Jim on behalf of the Advisory Board for all of his hard work and knowledge in this area. RE: Senior Centers Working Together BreAnna said both Oaklawn and Mulvane Senior Centers are willing to work with the Derby Senior Center so they can participate in our events. BreAnna said there is a department at the Oaklawn Senior Center for senior abuse. BreAnna said this will be very beneficial for all three Senior Centers RE: DRC BreAnna said she is working with the DRC and they are hoping to bridge the DRC and the Senior Center with programs and activities. 1 Agenda Item #2 RE: Advisory Board Fund Report August 2018. Diane Schmitt gave the report for August 2018. The expenses for June totaled $2,744,35 and the revenue totaled $607 with an ending balance $9,738.74. MOTION: Jim Burgess made a motion to approve the Advisory Board Fund Report August 2018. Gerald Brownlee seconded. VOTE: 5 yea, motion carried Agenda Item #3 RE: Approve August 8, 2018 Minutes. MOTION: Duane Day made a motion to approve the August 8, 2018 Minutes. Janice Neagle seconded. VOTE: 5 yea, motion carried Agenda Item #4 RE: Approve August 2018 Derby Dash Scholarship Report BreAnna gave the August 2018 Derby Dash Scholarship Report. $24 were used for scholarships which leaves an ending balance of $179. BreAnna said the Derby Dash Lunch Scholarship Program used $200 for an ending balance of $494. MOTION: Gerald Brownlee made a motion to approve the Derby Dash Scholarship Report for August 2018. Duane Day seconded. VOTE: 5 yea, motion carried Agenda Item #5 RE: TNT BreAnna said TNT will start back up October 2nd, the menu is Chili, crackers, baked potatoes and cinnamon rolls. BreAnna said Kay Morgan mentioned the increase in the cost of food. Discussion was held and it was decided to have raffles to supplement the profit of the TNT. The Board did not want to increase the price of the meal. 2 Agenda Item #6 RE: Covered Dish BreAnna said there was some comments about the sliced ham and the seniors missed the fried chicken. BreAnna said in November sliced turkey will be served, December will be a mix of meats for the holidays and Chicken in January. Agenda Item #7 RE: Center Updates Sewing Machine – BreAnna said she purchased a sewing machine for the Senior Center. The Quilters will also be using the sewing machine. Walls - BreAnna said the wall in the game room and the conference room are being prepared for the wallpaper to be hung on Wednesday September 19th. Whiteboard - BreAnna pointed out to the Board the new whiteboard which is hung in the conference room. Treadmill - BreAnna explained to the Board one of the treadmills is broke and will be repaired. The repairs will cost $998 but to purchase a new one is about $6k with the trade in. Agenda Item #8 RE: Can We Talk – National Alliance on Mental Health. BreAnna said Can We Talk is Thursday September 13th at 6 PM. The topic is the National Alliance on Mental Health. BreAnna said she has mailed out a letter to all the Churches in Derby and Mulvane to let them know about Can We Talk and all of our events that are taking place. BreAnna said she might start sending a voice call to all members to remind them about the Can We Talk programs. Agenda Item #9 RE: Garden Club BreAnna let the board know the community garden produced well this year and the club is getting ready to plant their fall garden. Agenda Item #10 RE: Progressive Bingo 3 BreAnna gave the Board an update on the August Progressive Bingo. BreAnna said concession sales were good. Discussion was held. BreAnna said there was even a Derby Police Officer that stopped by. Agenda Item #11 RE: Suggestions / Comment Cards BreAnna said there were no suggestion or comments at this time.
