APPROVED MINUTES SENIOR CENTER ADVISORY BOARD CITY OF DERBY September 8, 2021 9:12 AM ROLL CALL JIM BURGESS DIANE SCHMITT, TREASURER DIXIE CHAPMAN – VICE CHAIRMAN ELEANOR UNDERWOOD, CHAIRMAN TOM DAVIDSON, SECRETARY MARSHA VOLZ JANICE NEAGLE CITY STAFF KIEL MANGUS - ABSENT BREANNA MONK KIM HART Public Forum RE: Bill Howeth Dixie Chapman told the Board she had received a call from Bill Howeth. He was a member that attended the Advisory Board meetings regularly. Bill let her know his son had passed. It was suggested a card be sent from the senior center Friendship Club, in which he is very active. Agenda Item #1 RE: Meal Options / Senior Services BreAnna stated there will be a new caterer and with Blue Moon Catering taking over the meal preparation, that the discussion on the meals be tabled until a later date. RE: Horseshoe Pit BreAnna told the Advisory Board the Horseshoe Pit has been built on the West side of the building. The city workers are completing the fence at this time. In addition, the seniors can also play Corn Hole in this area. RE: Foyer Zen Space BreAnna said she is in the process of giving the Foyer a face lift to make it a welcoming space for the seniors and guests. RE: Ted Austin Retiring BreAnna let the Board know that Ted Austin’s last day will be September 16th. The Director of Operations position will not be filled and his job duties will be distributed to Richard Montano Operations Manager and other employees. RE: Kiel Mangus Promotion to City Manager 1 BreAnna stated Kiel Mangus has been chosen to be the new City Manager taking Kathy Sextons place after her retirement in December 2021. RE: Senior Center Funding Jim Burgess told the Board that Jim Howell along two other County Commissioners were very instrumental in getting the full funding approved for Valley Center and Mulvane senior centers. RE: 50th Celebration of the Derby Senior Center BreAnna explained the 50th Celebration Scavenger Hunt committee is now being formed. The plans for the hunt are to be held in November. BreAnna also stated the Historian committee is also being formed and she has several members signed up to help. Their first meeting is scheduled for Monday September 13th at 2:30 PM. Agenda Item #2 RE: Advisory Board Fund Report August 2021. Diane Schmitt gave the report for the Advisory Board Fund report August 2021. Diane reported there was $0 in revenue and $5,468.17 in expenses for a total balance $6,719.74. MOTION: Jim burgess moved the Advisory Board Fund Report for July 2021 be approved: Janice Neagle seconded. VOTE: 6 yea, motion carried Agenda Item #3 RE: Approve August 11, 2021 Minutes. MOTION: Janice Neagle made a motion to approve the August 11, 2021 minutes. Tom Davidson seconded. VOTE: 6 yea, motion carried Agenda Item #4 RE: Approve August 2021 Derby Dash Scholarship Report BreAnna gave the August 2021 Derby Dash Non-Senior Scholarships used was $196. leaving a balance of $1,302. BreAnna stated July 2021, no senior center funds were used, leaving a balance of $131. 2 MOTION: Dixie Chapman made a motion to approve the Derby Dash Scholarship Report for August 2021. Marsha Volz seconded. VOTE: 6 yea, motion carried Agenda Item #5 RE: Suggestion Cards BreAnna read the only suggestion card, it was to continue exercise classes with an instructor. Diane Schmitt asked BreAnna if there was any new information about getting exercise programs off of YouTube. BreAnna asked Amy Bruso to explain to the Board about the YouTube problems. BreAnna said she and Amy are still working on an instructor for the Friday class. Amy will research how to set up a YouTube account and schedule a time with the class. Discussion was held. Diane also mentioned that the new WSU students are not engaging with the seniors they have not even introduced themselves. BreAnna said she will check into this. Agenda Item #6 RE: COVID-19 Updates BreAnna stated there are no new changes to the COVID procedures. Staff will continue ask in the city buildings. Vaccinated Patrons are encouraged to wear a mask and, non-vaccinated must wear a mask. Agenda Item #7 RE: Senior Garden BreAnna stated Baker Fence Co. is who will install the fence for the senior garden. BreAnna said she will reach out to them again to see how far out the start date is. Agenda Item #8 FE: Advisory Board Biscuit & Gravy Fundraiser BreAnna stated there have been 7 meals sold so far for the Biscuit & Gravy Breakfast. Discussion was held and it was decided to buy supplies for 50 for the first breakfast. BreAnna asked the board members to arrive at 5:30 AM Friday September 10th to help prepare the meal. RE: “50th Celebration” T-Shirts BreAnna reported that there have been 4 shirts sold so far and the price is $16. The order will go in the end of September so they can be back by the October Biscuit & Gravy Breakfast. 3 RE: Murder Mystery BreAnna stated there is going to be a murder mystery board fundraiser in November. This will cost patrons $20 and she will be looking for a Fall murder mystery. Agenda Item #9 RE: Technology Lab Grant BreAnna said she has been working on several Grants for the updates to the Technology Lab. BreAnna let the Board know she is still waiting on a response from Meritrust and Credit Union of America. ADJOURNMENT MOTION: Dixie Chapman made a motion to adjourn. Tom Davidson seconded.
