Call to Order Meeting was called to order at 8:30am by Chair Chris Ogden. II. Approval of Minutes Bartlett submitted an amendment to November minutes and DeMott submitted an amendment to October minutes. MOTION: Motion to accept August, September, October, and November meeting minutes as amended. (Bartlett, Seiz 2nd) ACTION: Motion approved 7-0 III. Adjustments to the Agenda None. IV. Presentations  Public Art Committee Trinity Park Foundation Representative of the Trinity Park Foundation Julia Borbley-Brown submitted the Foundation’s proposed plan to donate a Michael Waller sculpture titled “The Rising Flame” to the City of Durham to be installed at the Markham Avenue median. The piece is 12ft tall and 2.5ft wide. Additionally, an Al Frega sculpture titled “Industrial Romantic” will be moved to median at the intersection of Main Street and Buchanan Boulevard, replacing the current “Trinity Park” artistic sign. This sign will be moved to the north end of the Markham Avenue median. If the donation is accepted, the City of Durham will be responsible for insuring the pieces. The Trinity Park Foundation will provide necessary maintenance. Borbley-Brown submitted a letter of support from the Trinity Park Neighborhood Association. MOTION: Motion to accept donation as presented. (Bartlett, Reiss 2nd) ACTION: Motion approved 7-0 Liberty Warehouse Art Wall at Durham Central Park Erin Kauffman from Durham Central Park and Cason Whitcomb from General Services presented the artist team selected to complete a public art installation along the Liberty Warehouse Art Wall at Durham Central Park. After receiving 104 submissions to a national call for qualifications, artist team Noa Younse and Jennifer Hiser were selected to complete this project. The City of Durham will begin contracting with Younse and Hiser in January 2018. Expected project completion is July 2018. The Public Art Committee representative on this Selection Committee was Katie Seiz. MOTION: Motion to support in concept. (DeMott, Ellison 2nd) ACTION: Motion approved 7-0 Downtown-Mixed Use Parking Garage Cason Whitcomb from General Services presented the artist team selected to complete a public art installation at the upcoming Downtown-Mixed Use Parking Garage. 81 submissions were received to this national call. After a jury process, four finalists were invited to visit Durham on 12/04/2017 – 12/5/2017 and participate in interviews. The Public Art Committee hosted these finalists on a walking tour on 12/04/2017. Artist team Blaine de St. Croix, Lara Kaufman, and Samuel Bissette were selected. The City of  Public Art Committee Durham will begin contracting with this team in January 2018. Project completion is expected January 2019. MOTION: Motion to approve selection as presented. (Reiss, Bartlett 2nd) ACTION: Motion approved 7-0 V. Old Business i. New Member Process and Term Adjustments Brian Smith, OEWD detailed policy changes surrounding the Public Art Committee New Member Process. Following precedent set by City of Durham City Council Application Process, the Durham Public Art Committee application will allow for free response on applicant’s reported gender. The application will open by January 2018. No action required. VI. New Business No new business. VII. Updates i. The FENCE: Durham Update The FENCE was removed 12/14/2017. Coordination will continue in January 2018 with the City of Greensboro, NC as to the potential of the FENCE traveling there to be temporarily displayed in part or in full. Other options include a permanent partial or full installation along a Durham trail or for regional winners to claim their individual panels. ii. SmART Initiative Artist LEk will be returning to Durham for community engagement events 1/10/18 – 1/12/18. Events will be held with Nasher Teen Council, the Durham Center for Senior Life, and Hillside High School. These events will help inform LEk with in his future designs for the Corcoran Street Garage Wrap. iii. New Public Art Program Logo The City of Durham recently released the new logo for the Public Art Program, in conjunction with the new City of Durham Logo. The new style is a “logo lock-up” with the intention to create a unified look for City departments and programs.  Public Art Committee The new City of Durham Public Art Program logo will be adopted as the official logo in January 2018. iv.
