Call to Order II. Approval of Minutes III. Adjustments to the Agenda Extended all five minute agenda allocations to ten minutes IV. Announcements and Presentations i. Board Chair announcements Chair Seiz requests that any committee member interested in the Vice chair position please contact her directly. Additionally, the Public Art committee retreat will be held in February 2019. The exact date and time will be determined in January 2019. ii. Mural Durham Amy Unell and Katy Clune from Duke University’s Mural Durham presented Mural Durham to the Public Art committee. The platform is a collaboration between Duke Arts, the City of Durham’s Cultural and Public Arts Program, and Artstigators. By using the hastag #MuralDurham Instagram or tagging @Mural_Durham on Twitter, community members are invited to help document the creative expression across the city. Over the past year, Mural Durham has seen a huge spike in their virtual presence, with their Public Art Committee Instagram account experiencing a 117% increase of followers. Mural Durham partnered with the City of Durham’s Cultural and Public Arts Program alongside the Nasher Museum, DukeArts, Duke Neighborhood Partnership, and Discover Durham to create the #DurhamMuralFinders. To learn more about Mural Durham’s partnerships, mission, and to explore the living archive please visit www.MuralDurham.com. To stay update to date on Mural Durham’s activity be sure to follow them @mural_durham or #muraldurham. Future plans for Mural Durham include transitioning the platform to a space to promote upcoming public arts and cultural events. Websites resources will include informational “Tool Kits” for artists as well as businesses interested in making or commissioning more murals in Durham. Mural Finders can be found at Discover Durham office on 212 W Main Street. The Finders will also be distributed to the Durham Parks and Recreation office and local artist organizations, per the Public Art committee’s suggestion. V. New Business i. Black Wall Street Gardens, Margaret DeMott and Cason Whitcomb (5 minutes) The Artist Selection committee for the Public Art at Black Wall Street Gardens met last week to determine finalists. The finalists were selected to be invited to interview. During the meeting, the selection committee thoroughly discussed the involvement of local artists. Next steps are to interviews the finalists. Applicants will be notified of their status in January 2019. The Public Art committee and community members present discussed the importance of selecting and artist of color this this project as well as the project process as whole. VI. Updates/Old Business i. Neighborhood Park Mural at Whipporwill Park Artist Lidia Churakova presented her initial design concept and process to the Public Art committee. After gathering feedback from Whipporwill neighborhood community members, Churakova designed an installation incorporating geometric elements, images of colorful people playing sports relevant to the sports offered at the park, and nature elements. The neighborhood had expressed great interest in a connective sports and nature theme that featured diversity and reflected their park’s energy and personality. Churakova’s next steps are to present to the design to the neighborhood for any comments. The Public Art committee shared feedback to include images of non-able bodied people to showcase broader representation. ii. Public Art Committee Task Teams Reports a.
