Everett Historical Commission Meeting Summary August 24, 2021 Commissioners Staff Guest Steve Fox, Chair Karen Stewart Michael Morgan Amelia Hieb Becky McCrary Bryan Partington Thomas Feeney John Simon Glenn Hunter Andrea Tucker Laura Cameron-Behee Patrick Hall Madison Vazquez Collin Palen The meeting convened at 6:30 pm with a roll call of Commissioners. Citizen Comments (for items not on tonight’s agenda) Chair Fox asked if there was a member of the public with comments or questions for items not on the agenda. No one spoke up with any comments. Approval of Prior Meeting Summary The meeting summary for the prior Historical Commission meeting held on June 22, 2021 was reviewed and no changes were requested. A motion to approve the meeting summary was made by Commissioner Hunter, seconded by Commissioner Miller and approved unanimously. Review Nomination to Everett Historic Register—Walsh Platt Motors Bldg. (2902 Rucker Av) Staff reviewed the recommendation to approve and introduced the owner’s representative, Michael Morgan. Mr. Morgan described the condition of the building, outlined on-going renovations and answered several questions. Daniel Jolly, owner of Fast Signs, will be the new tenant and presumably install a sign advertising the business. The Commission asked to be involved in the design of the sign. Commissioner Tucker made a motion to approve, seconded by Commissioner Hunter. The motion to approve recommending to the City Council to add the Walsh Platt Motors building to the Everett Historic Register was approved unanimously by the Historical Commission. Commissioner and Staff Comments Long Range Planning Manager, Becky McCrary, reported that the Historical Commission will have a new staff liaison. She also let the Commission know of the upcoming Comprehensive Plan update. Commissioner Hall announced that the Longfellow Elementary School and Annex was added to the National Historic Register. There was follow-up discussion about Everett Historic Register and District plaques for homes within the Donovan Historic District. Approximately 11 Donovan homes that were relocated out of the Donovan Historic District because of hospital expansion should be eligible for the plaques and have that portion of the block designated as part of the Donovan Historic District. This could be a future agenda item to work with staff to officially expand the Donovan Historic District and prepare a brochure about the historical significance to distribute to new and existing homeowners. 1 Chair Fox thanked Commissioner Hieb for chairing the last meeting in his absence. He stated that the annual calendar theme for Historic Everett will be about fires. It was determined that the big fire at the Walsh Platt Motors building occurred in 1948. A motion to adjourn was made by Commissioner Hunter, seconded by Commissioner Hieb, and approved with unanimous agreement. 2
