FAIRMONT PARKS COMMISSION
June 21, 2017
Members present: Marianne Moran, Brad Merrifield, Corwin Russell, JR Bennett, and Patrick
Snively, Neil Stalnaker
Members absent: Dora Grubb
Advisors present: Hanna Weaver and Robin Gomez
Call to Order: Hanna Weaver called the meeting to order at 6:01 pm.
Item 1. Approval of Minutes. Marianne motioned to approve the minutes, JR Bennett 2nd.
Minutes approved.
Item 2. Communications & Announcements. Neil Stalnaker mentioned that he traveled to
Gatlinburg, Tennessee and looked at different playgrounds in that area. He discovered a large
maze called “Amaze Maze” and mentioned that it could be something for Fairmont to look into
in the future for areas such as Windmill Park. They are around 45,000 square feet and costs
around $100,000 and it easily assembled and taken down for the winter.
Item 3. Parks Report. Hanna Weaver gave a brief report.
Two grants for Norwood Park are due at the end of this week and next week. Hanna is applying
for one and the DAC is applying for the other. Hanna showed renderings from a few companies
that she has communicated with.
The subject of parking at Norwood came up and the past draft agreement the City was working
on with the church next door. The commission will review the agreement and decide if the
agreement is still applicable as is, or if it needs to be changed.
There is a request for a porta-potty to be placed at Morgantown Avenue Park. JR Bennett
motioned that one be placed at Morgantown Ave Park beginning in the 2018 fiscal year, Patrick
Snively 2nd.
Preparations are underway for the court paving at Morris Park.
Old Business.
JR Bennett made a motion to lock the gates at Windmill Park and Morgantown Avenue Park
from 9pm-7am, per the City Code for when Parks close. Patrick Snively 2nd.
Patrick Snively motioned to add summer hours from Memorial Day- Labor Day to close from
10pm-6am unless there are scheduled approved events. Corwin Russell 2nd. *** This was
changed after communication with ALL commissioners to read that all signage must be
obeyed, so that each park could have different hours if necessary without the need to change
the ordinance.
New Business.
Marianne Moran motioned to adjourn, Brad Merrifield 2nd. Meeting was adjourned at 7:14.
