Architectural Advisory Board George Mason High School Library, 7124 Leesburg Pike, Falls Church, VA 22043 April 3, 2019, 7:30 p.m. The meeting was called to order at 7:35 p.m. 1. Roll Call: Mr. Bitici, Mr. Osburn, Mr. Way, Mr. Wong were present. Mrs. Friedlander was not present. 2. Petitions: There were no petitions 3. Consent Calendar: There were no consent calendar items 4. Other Business: The board was informed that Diane Duggan has resigned her seat on the board. Chairman Way recognized Mrs. Duggan for her dedicated time and service to the AAB and the City of Falls Church. The Board thanks her for her contributions and wishes her all the best. 5. Old Business: There was no old business 6. New Business: a. Feedback requested on the preliminary site plan submission of the Mary Riley Styles Public Library expansion, located at 120 N Virginia Ave, RPC #51-113-005 of the Falls Church Real Property Records, zoned OD-MCA, Official Design and Municipal Center Area. Applicant has requested to discuss the AAB’s opinion on the materials used for the project. The Applicant provided the board with materials samples for the library including brick for the walls, slate for the roof, and metal for gutters and downspouts. The Board appreciates the effort to match existing materials. The Board was assured the various materials would match existing as closely as possible in color, size, and texture. The Board had no feedback on the brick, recommended the new slate roof have the same exposure as the existing slate roof, and was fine with the gutter materials as presented. The Board also approved with the choice to use plastic cornice molding to replace all existing wood cornice molding, as long as the vertical dimension was as close as possible so as to maintain visual proportions with respect to windows and rooflines. Mr. Osburn asked about the HVAC units depicted on the Virginia Ave. elevation, and the Applicant indicated those units would be set back considerably from the edge of the roof, at a minimum 10 feet, and would likely not be seen by pedestrian or street traffic. b. Motion requested on submittal of AAB’s official comment memo for the West Falls Church Economic Development project Special Exception Entitlement. The WFC project SEE was presented to the AAB on March 13, 2019, during a joint session with the Planning Commission, Tree Commission, and Environmental Sustainability Council. Harry E. Minutes: a. Minutes from the March 6 meeting were reviewed and discussed. Mr. Wong made a motion they be approved as submitted, Mr. Bitici seconded, and the motion passed unanimously. 8.
