CATCH Meeting July 24, 2014 Falls Church City Hall Dogwood Room Minutes / Notes Present: Barb Cram, Keith Thurston, Nikki Graves Henderson, Marybeth Connelly, Lindy Hockenberry, Midge Wang, Rachel Crichton. Barbara Cram called the meeting to order at 9:44am. It was announced that the Little City CATCH Foundation grant applications are due on August 1, 2014. The EDA grant applications are due on August 31, 2014. Grant info can be found on the City Website under “About Us.” Applicants are reminded to add a line item budget for their projects explaining their spending plans. CATCH Website Update. The site home page is being updated. The City’s new website will include a link to route visitors to CATCH, but the link has not been installed yet. On the CATCH Website, a new area has been installed for the “Going the Village” neighborhood walking tours that were taped in the past. Three segments have been included thus far. The Virtual Visitor’s center has been started and the video segments have been linked. The NBC4 segment is linked as well as video produced as the product of the “Sights and Sounds” grants in FY13. The Banner Program continues to grow with three additional pole brackets and banners were added on East Broad Street. There is a balance of $600 left in the program for additional banners – all to be expended in City Center. Nikki commented that there are well established studies to document how many impressions or views that are required to create a remembrance or impression on the viewer. It was commented that some of the banners need to be washed. There was a discussion on Way Finder signage and the need for oversight and coordination on the different efforts. The Broad and West Street development is out for comment and raised concerned at the work session. A video of that presentation is available in the City website. . The Second reading approval for the City Council will occur on November 24, 2014. Keith Thurston provided an update of the Legislative Committee which included a site visit to Reston’s Lake Anne and nearby Westover that provides an ideal attractive neighborhood center for shopping, dining, post office, and public library-school combination. Barb has distributed copies of the Public Art Policy of three nearby jurisdictions for review – Arlington, Alexandria and Reston. Lindy updated that she had visited Luray Virginia and saw a great reuse of a historic train station that included art as tile work in the floor. Nikki raised the question of possibility of honoring or restoring the Old Blacksmith Shop at The Falls Church. She understands that the new church administration is not aware of the history of the Blacksmith shop – and some opportunities may exist now with Rev John Ohmer.
