Barbara Cram, Chair opened the meeting at 9:35. Several members responded they had meeting
conflicts. Issues discussed were:
Minutes: The minutes of past meeting were reviewed and approved with one name spelling
correction.
Public Art: We’ll plan a meeting with Andy Yoder, a well-known designer of public art that is
local, to talk about his background and understanding of public art. We’ll work more on the
public policy part and then have a discussion with the Planning Commission. The EDA has seen
and liked the concept that Andy Yoder put forward. Andrew Painter and Joe Wetzel also have
been helpful in gathering policies of other jurisdictions. There is a public process that must occur
and will be mapped out.
City Plaza: City staffer Kim Callahan is working the process to advance the concept from the
EDA to turn Municipal Park (in the 100 block of West Broad Street) into a plaza).
Approximately $500K has been earmarked from the proceeds of the sale of the City owned
Pudolnick Property, now Harris Teeter.
Black History Month: Ed Henderson announced that Tinner Hill has been award a grant from
Virginia Power for a program to be held during February 2018. Additionally, It is possible that
UDC may be naming a gymnasium on their campus for E.B. Henderson.
Watch Night: The CATCH Foundation is beginning to prepare for the celebration for December
31, 2017. There was a request to recognize the history and past coordinators of Watch Night.
Marketing: Marybeth Connelly reminded the groups that a common marketing opportunity is
coming soon with Halloween. If groups will email her their Halloween or fall activities, they can
be packaged into consolidated marketing.
Development: There will be walking tour open to all for the Broad and Washington
development on Ocotber 16, 2017 at 6pm.
