Arts and Humanities Council of Falls Church Meeting February 21, 2019 Falls Church Arts Minutes Members Present: Corey Jannicelli, Barb Cram, Sally Cole, Laura Hull, Edwin Henderson, Marybeth Connelly, Rosemary Ziskind, Ron Anzalone, Lindy Hockenberry, Ellen Gross, Stephanie Oppenheimer, Irene Chambers, Guests: Keith Thurston (CATCH Foundation), Lyn Sherlock (Falls Church DAR) Call to Order: The meeting was called to order by Barb Cram at 9:34 am. Minutes: Meeting minutes from January were approved with adjustments to attendance TLCCF Report:  No Updates Development Update:  West End o Sun Feb 24 at 2pm- Town Hall meeting scheduled for at the Community Center  Wed March 6 at 7pm - A&H Council Special Exception Entitlement meeting  Questions raised by A&H Council Members: 1. How is art being incorporated into the development outside and inside? a. Learn more about the art proposed on the outside of the parking garage facing the school b. Potential for Art to be displayed on temporary construction fence facing the school 2. What provision is there for musical and theatrical performances inside and outside? 3. If there is provision for open space and the potential for outdoor festivals and performances like a jazz or art? a. Is there integration of the necessary infrastructure (platform area, ample electricity for bands and lighting). b. Will public art having up lighting? 4. Ways to incorporate Falls Church History into the project a. Potential for a display case/historic info kiosk b. History incorporated into design aspects such as an engraved walkway 1  c. Will there be any historical references for the old Keesling farm and other properties that make up the parcel?  Founders Row o Monday March 4 - Groundbreaking scheduled  Aldi Grocery Store o Grand Opening happened prior to this meeting on Feb 21 Old Business:  Heritage Days o Tuesday Feb 27 at 10:30 am –meeting scheduled at Cherry Hill Farmhouse  Public Art Policy o Discussion on what is considered Public Art and what can be included in the Public Art policy was discussed. Corey has scheduled a meeting with City Attorney for legal recommendations o Group will meet again before the March A&H Council meeting (Date TBD)  Downtown Park o Goal is to have the project complete by Arbor Day  Arts & Cultural District Map o No recent progress has been made on finalizing the map o Corey has agreed to reach out to Paul Stoddard for an update New Business:  5 Year Action Plan o Group agreed to review its last action plan at the March meeting to identify what work has been accomplished and what work we still have to work on. o The CATCH Foundation will need to apply for a grant to pay for a future consultant o Group agreed to revisit the idea of a new action plan in a year Elections  Vote was taken on Chair and Vice Chair positions o Barb Cram was elected Chair and Laura Hull Vice Chair Roundtable:  Friday March 22 @ 8pm Victorian Society hosts Literary Evening of Sherlock Holmes at Cherry Hill Farmhouse. Email cjannicelli@fallschurchva.gov for tickets  Feb 22-March 3 Ron Anzaolne will be preforming in The Gondoliers in Rockville  Catch Foundation has started research on rack card stands to be used to co-market events at different A&H Council member locations.  Thurs Feb 28 at 7pm Ed Henderson will be speaking on African Americans and Eminent Domain in Falls Church at the public library.  Sun Feb 24 at 2pm Creative Cauldron hosts a Tinner Hill Fundraiser-tickets are $35. 2   Tues Feb 24 from 5pm to closing Rock Star Realty and Falls Church Distillers hosts a Marty Gras Party  Sat March 9 at 10:30 am Memorial for Gary Laporta at the Falls Church. Donations to be made in Gary’s name to Creative Cauldron.  Planning shared that the West End small area plan & CIP are moving to City Council  Falls Church DAR is working to get more involved in the city, focusing on women’s issues, education and continuing ongoing work cleaning veterans headstones in Oakwood Cemetery  Sat March 9 at 8pm Celtic Music Concert at Cherry Hill Farmhouse  Sat March 16 at 2pm History of Sleeves by Caroline Hottenstein. Call Midge Wang for reservations 703-534-8394 cost is $10  Tinner Hill has decided to focus efforts on four signature events a year- Dear Editor, Music Concert, MLK March and a black history month event.  Irene Chambers her next Artist in Residency will be here for 3 weeks in June  Wed Feb 27- Career chat scheduled at FCCPS and looking for artists/ engineer/architects  Thurs March 14 from 11 am to 1:30pm– 10th grader at FCCPS present a project on something they care about and the school is looking for adults to come and give feedback  Fri April 13- FCCCPS Middle School Career Fair  Sun March 31 at 2pm -Women’s History Walk beginning at Tinner Hill Plaza  Schools working to finalize design for the new high school in the next 6 weeks  Women’s Oral History Project- currently interviewing Carol Delong, then Barb Cram  Seth Heminway has raised some concerns about the VPIS Neighborhood Tree Program and the current / future of residential construction in Falls Church  Thurs Feb 14 – March 10 Thunder Knocking at Creative Cauldron  Fri Feb 15 to March 10 Bolts from the Blue Exhibit by Helen Power at Art Space  Mon Feb 25 from 7- 9 pm Creative Cauldron hosts first reading of “On Air” bold new works project with a wine and cheese reception  Creative Cauldron was awarded Raising Art Star by Dominion  Library’s current book collection is at 116,000 and will be 110,000 after renovations due to the need to be ADA compliant  Sun Feb 24 –March 23 All Artist Show @ FCA, opening Sat Feb 23 at 7:30 pm  FCA is looking into a potential Egyptian Art Show this summer Adjourn Meeting was adjourned by at 11:09 am Next Meeting is scheduled for Thursday, March 21 at 9:30 am at Falls Church Arts Submitted: By Corey Jannicelli 3
