MINUTES Human Services Advisory Council City of Falls Church PURPOSE OF MEETING: To advise City Council on human services delivery to Falls Church citizens. DATE OF MEETING: August 15, 2019 PLACE OF MEETING: Oak Room, City Hall MEETING CALLED TO ORDER BY NICOLE NEWMAN: at 6:40 p.m. THOSE PRESENT: HSAC Members: Staff: Craig Cheney Nancy Vincent Alisa Macht Dana Lewis Nicole Newman (chair) City Council Liaison Anne Norloff Marybeth Connelly Debra Z. Roth Student Representative Tahaseen Shaik Visitor Michael Kull APPROVAL OF MINUTES - approved June minutes MEMBER REPORTS –  Property tax relief was passed.  Oakwood apartments have renovated and changed their name to Falls Green. They have lost the State Department contract. Their goal is to eliminate furnished apartments.  The comprehensive plan housing chapter has been adopted. The suggestion by HSAC to change the name of neighborhood preservation to historic has happened.  The group would like a second presentation on the environmental chapter draft. OLD BUSINESS:  Planning for Annual Report The group would have liked Sue to email her statistics before she left. They would like outcomes from the CSF report regarding recipients in 15 categories. NEW BUSINESS:  Outreach Regarding Mass Shooter There will be active shooter training for Council now that they are in new chambers. There has also been a “First 12 Minutes” training for the community. This might be good for the commissioners. Should there be outreach on this? Some communities have children wear bullet proof backpacks.  Mental Health Community Information Insurance deductibles are too high. There should be information given to the community on mental health. People are fearful of other people that are mentally ill. Stigma had been reduced and is now coming back.  Encouraging all residents to Access services - Staff should look at partnering with CASA. Send information out to schools. Perhaps there could be an application to a broader grant. Police are not singling people out. Residents should know this.
