MINUTES Human Services Advisory Council City of Falls Church PURPOSE OF MEETING: To advise the City Council on human services delivery to Falls Church residents. DATE OF MEETING: May 16, 2024 PLACE OF MEETING: In Person (Dogwood Room) w/ Virtual Option MEETING CALLED TO ORDER BY Brian Bowden at 6:31 p.m. THOSE PRESENT: HSAC Members: Student Representatives: Brian Bowden Carter Williams Debra Roth Liz Rotherham Jeff Person Marsha Hertzberg CSB Representative: Nicole Newman Commission on Aging Representatives: Staff: Claudia Volk Ripal Patel City Council Representative: Caroline Lian APPROVAL TO ADOPT THE AGENDA: The agenda for this meeting was adopted. Moved by Nicole Newman and seconded by Jeff Person APPROVAL OF MINUTES: The minutes from the May, 2024 meeting were approved. Moved by Debra Z Roth and seconded by Marsha Hertzberg NEW BUSINESS: • Falls Church Human Services Overview – Ripal Patel provided an overview of Department of Human Services through a power point presentation. Brian Bowden asked Ripal Patel if it was possible to receive regular qualitative and quantitative updates (e.g., number of requests for rent relief, etc.) on services being requested and/or utilized. • Affordable Living Policy – Jeff Person provided an update on Affordable Living Policy. Jeff Person said he will send a copy of the policy for members to review. • Recognition for Graduating Seniors – Brian Bowden recognized three student representatives to HSAC for their hard work and participation. A certificate of appreciation was provided to two student reps in attendance. Ripal Patel said he will deliver the third certificate for Jack Ackerman. • HSAC Planning – Brian Bowden did a power point presentation for HSAC members to outline timeline showing yearly calendar and task distribution. Brian Bowden promised to share this presentation with other members. Old BUSINESS: • Planning for joint meeting with Housing Commission – Senator Saddam Azlan Salim – Brian Bowden spoke briefly about Senator’s visit and asked members to think about topics they would like to discuss for this meeting. Brian Bowden will reach out to Cindy Mester and let members know of upcoming plans for this meeting. Jeff Person made a motion to adjourn the meeting, Nicole Newman Seconded that and all members voted yes to adjourn the meeting at 8:10 PM The City of Falls Church is committed to the letter and spirit of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
