MEETING MINUTES OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES MARY RILEY STYLES PUBLIC LIBRARY Held in the Mary Riley Styles Public Library 120 N. Virginia Avenue Falls Church, VA 22046 August 17, 2022 1. CALL TO ORDER Chairperson Jeff Peterson called the meeting to order at 6:08p.m. 2. ROLL CALL AND INTRODUCTION OF GUESTS The following Board members attended the meeting: Bizzy Bracken Patrick Cronin Janis Johnson Molly Novotny Stephanie Oppenheimer (Absent) Jeff Peterson Chrystie Swiney Library Director Jenny Carroll was also present for the meeting. School Board liaison, Sue Dimock and City Council liaison, Marybeth Connelly were both absent. 3. RECEIPT OF PETITIONS Fellows Park Master Plan Fellows Park Master Plan Draft discussed by the Board. Ms. Carroll to convey to the park planners that the board loves the draft plan and they ask to be kept abreast of the project. Library Holiday Closures The City holidays in December are on December 23 and 26. The library is closed Sunday, December 25 . The director requests that Saturday, December 24 the library is closed as welL Upon a motion duly made by Ms. Swiney and seconded by Ms. Johnson the library is closed on December 24th. 4. APPROVAL OF JULY 20, 2022 MEETING MINUTES Upon a motion duly made by Ms. Novotny and seconded by Ms. Bracken, the Library Board approved the July 20, 2022 Meeting Minutes with minor corrections. 5. LIBRARY REPORT AND ANNOUNCEMENTS Upcoming Programs: • Summer Reading prize pick-up is on-going and sign-up continues until September 30. Mr. Cro- nin requested investigating providing free Nationals tickets in future Summer Reading pro- grams. 1 • Fall programming will include baby storytime, paws to read and performers. Personnel: • Steve Ingeman, Technical Services Supervisor last day was August 12. • Currently hiring for a Library Assistant I vacancy in the Circulation Department. Strategic Plan Update: • Tentative dates for the community sessions are October 18-20. • Strategic Retreat date proposal is November 15th 10:00am-5:00pm to include 2 board members. November 16th would be the Library Board meeting to include a voting exercise. The board discussed the proposed dates and requested that November 15th be a public meeting so that all board members could participate (if they so desired). 6. LIBRARY FOUNDATION REPORT Jess Sabo, Foundation President, presented the Foundation report: • The Foundation Board will meet monthly on the 2nd Monday of the month from 3:30-5pm starting in September. . • The Annual campaign will start mid-November. • The Foundation wrote the check for the annual support of the library. • At the Fall Festival the Foundation will be sharing a table with the library. The Foundation was not selected to run the beer garden this year. • Greenbelt Homes is a new corporate sponsor. 7. COUNCIL LIAISON REPORT No report 8. SCHOOL BOARD LIAISON REPORT No report 9. ARTS AND HUMANITIES COUNCIL REPORT Ms. Swiney reported that there was a discussion of public art and that future installations will be vetted through the Arts and Humanities Council. There was a request on clarity regarding the public art policy. 10. POLICY 1sT READING- CIRCULATION OF LIBRARY MATERIALS Upon a motion duly made by Ms. Novotny and seconded by Ms. Swiney, the library Board approved the 1st reading of the policy with some changes. 11. ON-GOING EQUITY DISCUSSION There was a question regarding Ukrainian refugees and if the library has seen a large number. Ms. Carroll stated that this had not been noted. 2 12. TRUSTEE PHOTOS Board members had photos taken following the meeting or agreed to provide a photo. 13. BUSINESS NOT ON THE AGENDA None 14.
