Regular Meeting of the Advisory Board of Recreation and Parks Held at the Falls Church Community Center, Kenneth R. Burnett Building 223 Little Falls Street, Falls Church, Virginia 22046 Minutes November 1, 2017 1. Call to Order Charley O’Hara called the meeting to order at 7:06 p.m. Members present were Planning Commission Representative Lindy Hockenberry, City Council Liaison Marybeth Connelly, Charley O’Hara, Kathy Chandler, and Leslie Rye. Staff members present were Amy Maltese, Deputy Director, and Paul Stoddard, Principle Planner. 2. Minutes Leslie Rye motioned to approve the October Minutes. Kathy Chandler seconded. The motion was approved. 3. Receipt of Public Petitions and Board Member Petitions - No public petitions 4. Recreation Director’s Report -Halloween Carnival went very well. Veteran’s Day Ceremony next and held during Farmers’ Market hours. Holiday Craft show is full and we have more vendors than in the past. -Basketball evaluations started tonight – enrollment currently up by 40 participants. -Interviews underway for Senior Administrative Assistant and Recreation Specialist positions. -LaShawn will come to a future meeting. 5. New Business Conversation with Paul Stoddard, Principle Planning regarding obtaining grants for future park projects. - Review of outdoor community gathering spaces as noted in Parks for People, field use and the implementation schedule also listed in Parks for People. - The City has submitted a grant proposal for improvements to pedestrian crossings at Berman Park. It was for $600,000 and would be for all 4 intersections. No match required. Award notice will be available in June. It would be for FY21, with funds becoming available July 2020. Paul has requested a volunteer from the Advisory Board of Recreation and Parks to be present in citizen communications. - Additional infrastructure improvements being considered for Haycock Road between the Giant and GMHS Campus. - Other grant resources available for trail projects. Planning would need input from Recreation and Parks and the Advisory Board of Recreation and Parks. Charley would like more aesthetic, non- asphalt trails where possible. - Lindy requested if a listing of grant opportunities and deadlines could be put together for the advisory board. 6. Old Business a) Cherry Hill grand reopening – Charley will serve as Master of Ceremonies – the Advisory Board would like to hold the reopening celebration in the spring. Park is currently still open with construction expected to begin sometime next week. b) Kim Callahan will attend the December meeting to provide an update on CIP projects. c) Student representatives have met with Danny in regards to No Smoking project. d) Lindy - NOVA Parks recently attended a Planning Commission meeting in regards to programming at the Tinner Hill Historic Site. e) Broad and Washington Project may be on the agenda at next month’s meeting. f) Marybeth - Would like to look into grant money to see Rolling Road be preserved as a park or historic site, possibly include a monument. g) Lindy - Miller House was approved. h) Charley – TJ field is in bad shape, shows the need for Larry Graves. 8. Adjournment Kathy Chandler motioned to adjourn the meeting and Leslie Rye seconded the motion. Under unanimous vote, meeting adjourned.
