Regular Meeting of the Advisory Board of Recreation and Parks Held at the Falls Church Community Center, Kenneth R. Burnett Building 223 Little Falls Street, Falls Church, Virginia 22046 Minutes DRAFT May 2, 2018 1. Call to Order Leslie called the meeting to order at 7:02 p.m. Members present were Leslie Rye, Kathy Chandler, Kim Hicks, Bill Brew, Planning Commission Representative Lindy Hockenberry, City Council Liaison Letty Hardi. Student Representatives James Gogal and Sonya Lu were also present. Staff members present were Danny Schlitt, Director Recreation & Parks and Amy Howell, Senior Administrative Assistant Recreation & Parks. 2. Receipt of Public Petitions and Board Member Petitions 3. Minutes for Approval: April 4, 2018 - Kathy Chandler motioned to approve the minutes, Kim Hicks seconded the motion. Leslie Rye abstained. The motion passed. 4. Recreation Director’s Report - Budget passed. Instead of a .06 cent increase, there was a .2 ½ cent increase in the tax rate for all City residents. The Recreation & Parks budget was part of the approved budget. Danny extended his thanks to the Board for their support during the budget process. - Contract wording for the Larry Graves project has been worked out with the City Attorney. The contract has been approved to be signed by the City Manager and by Fairfax County. The project is expected to be under construction by fall. - We are working on hiring summer staff. - Recreation & Parks is revamping their logo with help of the Office of Communications. Staff has been involved and there has been discussion about use of a mascot. - 5. New Business - Discussion about writing a letter of support for a 15 million dollar grant that the City has applied for with NVTA to make the intersection near GMHS more walkable with the use of crosswalks, hot signals, and undergrounding of some utilities. - Presentation by Sheila Frost, of the HEAL Initiative, to discuss reduction of healthcare costs and improving economic growth through healthy vending, reduced driving, and urban agriculture. There is a plan to visit Boards & Commissions to promote further awareness. 6. Old Business a) Big Chimneys Park project update - Kim Callahan presented a project overview. - Focus on open space, water management, and updated play equipment. - Aiming to break ground November/October and complete the project in April 2019. b) No Smoking Project - Meeting was held with Office of Communications. - Suggestion made to make this a social campaign and to come up with other ideas for marketing information such as chalk messages in certain places, sign contest for kids, media outreach, etc. (Newspress, social media). c) Monthly school update - Meeting with campus coordinating committee. - Proposals due by May 1 will be posted May 15 after approval. - Task Force selected soon. 7. Adjournment - Kathy Chandler motioned to adjourn the meeting. Bill Brew seconded the motion. Under unanimous vote, meeting adjourned at 8:45PM.
