June 6, 2018
1. Call to Order
Leslie called the meeting to order at 7:01 p.m. Members present were Leslie Rye, Kim Hicks,
Bill Brew, Planning Commission Representative Lindy Hockenberry, City Council Liaison Letty
Hardi. Student Representative Sonya Lu was also present. Staff members present were Danny
Schlitt, Director Recreation & Parks and Amy Howell, Senior Administrative Assistant
Recreation & Parks.
2. Receipt of Public Petitions and Board Member Petitions
3. Minutes for Approval: May 2, 2018
- Bill Brew motioned to approve the minutes, Kim Hicks seconded the motion. The
motion passed.
4. Recreation Director’s Report
- Memorial Day was a success. We had the largest crowd for the Memorial Day
Ceremony that we have had. Parade ran smoothly.
- Tinner Hill Festival this coming weekend. Fencing going up this weekend for the 2-
day event.
- Focus turns to July 4th preparations after the Tinner Hill Festival is over.
- Summer Camps will be starting June 25. We have 40 vendors providing camps.
- Gym is back in use at Mary Ellen Henderson.
- End of the fiscal year is approaching. Spending is close and there is some concern
about facility needs being met.
- Grant money was used to complete the art project at Howard E. Herman Stream
Valley Park.
5. New Business
- There is an opportunity for the City to host a quarter scale plaster sculpture of one of
the finalists for the Women’s Monument that will be placed in Richmond’s
Governor’s Square. Would there be any interest by the City?
6. Old Business
a) No Smoking Project (student representatives)
- A logo has been created. Sonya will send it to Danny so that it can be shared with
the Advisory Board. Work regarding the No Smoking Project will continue over
the summer.
b) Monthly School Update (Leslie)
- There will be down selecting October through May with detailed negotiations.
- More organizing for task groups over the next month.
- Recreation has some concerns for next summer regarding the project and the
impact on camps and July 4th fireworks.
c) Park Projects
- Can focus on setting date for Cherry Hill Park ribbon cutting.
- Everything is signed and ready for installment at Larry Graves Field.
Construction is set to begin in the fall.
7. Adjournment
- Bill Brew motioned to adjourn the meeting. Kim Hicks seconded the motion. Under
unanimous vote, meeting adjourned at 8:05PM.
