Regular Meeting of the Advisory Board of Recreation and Parks Held at the Falls Church Community Center, Kenneth R. Burnett Building 223 Little Falls Street, Falls Church, Virginia 22046 Minutes May 1, 2019 1. Call to Order Charley O’Hara called the meeting to order at 7:10 p.m. Members present were Charley O’Hara, Leslie Rye, Kathy Chandler, Bill Brew, Kim Hicks, City Council Liaison Letty Hardi, Planning Commission Representative Melissa Teates, and School Board Representative Justin Castillo. Planning Staff members present were Paul Stoddard and Shaina Schaffer. Recreation & Parks Staff members present were Danny Schlitt, Director Recreation & Parks and Amy Howell, Senior Administrative Assistant Recreation & Parks. 2. Receipt of Public Petitions and Board Member Petitions None 3. Minutes for Approval: April 3, 2019 Bill Brew motioned to approve the minutes, Leslie Rye seconded the motion. The motion passed with modification to include information on the MOU. 4. Recreation Director’s Report - Memorial Day preparations are underway. - Soccer is continuing. - Hiring camp staff for the summer. - VPIS Attic Treasures sale this weekend. - The first Summer Farmers Market this weekend. - Dance recitals coming up on May 11 and May 18. - Concerts in the Park will begin soon. 5. New Business a.) Comp Plan Chapter Updates: Presented by Planning Staff - Pedestrian Bridge. - Demographic Trends. - How to incorporate compiled information into data for future planning. - Includes information on a policy guide, budget process, and identifies future projects. - Covers the importance of Vision including community use and maintenance of open space. b.) Great Streets Plans: Presented by Planning Staff - Addressing better walkability and pedestrian access. - Concerns expressed about the width of Park Avenue during the Memorial Day Parade and the location of the stage. - Possibility of public art. 6. Old Business a.) Big Chimneys Park - Should be under construction in about 8 weeks. - The Board would like to plan a groundbreaking and ribbon cutting. b.) Howard E. Herman Stream Valley Park Entrance Design and Signage - There were issues with the archway signage width but the problem will be fixed by spinning the pillars. c.) Larry Graves Turf - The ground has been dry which is needed to move forward. - Ground testing will need to be done to ensure the ground is ready. d.) Downtown Plaza/Naming - Partial work has started. - Hope to have work done by next month. e.) No Smoking Project (student representatives - No update. f.) Monthly School Project Update (Leslie, Justin) - Town Hall meeting held to discuss school and community use/parking spaces/surge parking. 7. Adjournment Bill Brew motioned to adjourn the meeting.
