Regular Meeting of the Advisory Board of Recreation and Parks Held at the Falls Church Community Center, Kenneth R. Burnett Building 223 Little Falls Street, Falls Church, Virginia 22046 Minutes June 5, 2019 1. Call To Order Charley O’ Hara called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m. Members present were Charley O’Hara, Leslie Rye, Kathy Chandler, Bill Brew, Kim Hicks, City Council Liaison Letty Hardi, Planning Commission Representative Melissa Teates. Staff members present include Danny Schlitt, Director of Recreation and Parks and Scarlett Williams, Program Supervisor for Special Events. 2. Receipt of Public Petitions and Board Members Petitions None 3. Minutes for Approval: May 1, 2019 Bill Brew motioned to approve minutes, Kathy Chandler seconded the motion. 4. Recreation Director’s Report - Memorial Day – Great weather and large turnout. This was Scarlett’s first Memorial Day event. There seemed to be no issues with the Bike Share. Parade participants did a good job of limiting gaps. - Summer Camps open 6/17, Up to 40 offerings/ week - Senior Administrative Assistant Opening Position 5. New Business Meet Program Supervisor, Scarlett Williams i. Born and raised in Falls Church and previously worked for FCCPS. ii. Went over Programs 1. Popup in the parks 2. Campout in Cherry Hill 3. Rain deer dash iii. Scarlett is a liaison between Tinner Hill foundation & City 6. Old Business a. Downtown Park - Turf drains well - Working on how to include the downtown park into Falls Church Park system - Will be able to reserve the park through Rec & Parks - Sample signage was provided to board - Considering shade sails. - Alley is private but will be closed - There will be programing (donating time - yoga, music together, similar programs) - New lighting in Park - Working to create a standalone calendar that is easy to navigate. - Naming process. Nominations closing in 2 and a half weeks. Since the advisory board of Recreation and Parks does not meet in July and August, the advisory board will nominate a member to act on their behalf for the naming of the park. Leslie Rye made a motion to give Bill Brew the power to submit names to City Council on behalf of the advisory board of Recreation and Parks. Charley seconded the motion. All were in favor. - Kathy requested sign said dog must be on leash and remain off the synthetic turf. b. GMHS Ground Breaking is June 14th 2pm. c. Big Chimneys Park - Information from architect engineer due 6/7 - could be in construction July/August. - May separate entrance signage from construction so the sign doesn’t hold up the project. d. Howard E. Herman Stream Valley Park - Sign will be modified to fit back on pillars. Park has been slowed due to rush on downtown plaza. e. Cherry Hill - Tree sculptures coming this summer. Urban forestry took some logs and enhanced the pathway. New sidewalk on Park Avenue being installed. f. Larry Graves Turf - On schedule/ 1 week behind/on budget g. June 24th Grand Opening of City Hall h. West Falls Church Development Project - Conceptual plan has some changes. June 9 Town Hall at 2pm. i. VA Beach incident – need to visit prevention measures. j. Fellows property, Master Park planning process - Start to look at dates & times at next meeting in September - Talked to Second chance about recycling/reusing deconstructed materials - Get feedback from neighbors 7. Adjournment - Leslie Rye motioned to adjourn the meeting. Bill Brew seconded the motion. Under unanimous vote meeting adjourned at 8:30PM.
