COMMUNITY RELATIONS COMMISION Regular Meeting DECEMBER 5, 2016 Civic Center Members Present: Melissa Meechan, Mark Marquez, Lynn Love, Harelda Anderson, David John, and Alicia Middleton Members Absent: Michelle Bates, Cathryn Abeyta and Charles Kromer Staff Present: Julie Baird, Ass’t City Manager and Joanna Oliver, Secretary Guest Present: Pamela Drake, SJC Partnership, Alema Jenkins and Olivia Myers, students at SJC CALL TO ORDER Melissa Meechan called the meeting to order at 4:07 pm with a quorum of members present; the following procedures were duly had and taken. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Lynn Love made a motion to approve the November 7, 2016 minutes with one change. Mark Marquez seconded. Motion passed. CREATING CULTURAL HARMONY CONFERENCE Pamela Drake with San Juan County Partnership gave a presentation for the 2017 Cultural Harmony Conference to be held in February of 2017. The theme for the conference will be Celebrating Family Culture and the Culture of Family. She has requested $5,000 from the Commission to sponsor this event. The Commission will also have a booth at the Conference. David John made a motion to approve the sponsorship for $5,000, Harelda Anderson seconded. Motion passed. SAN JUAN COLLEGE AFRICAN AMERICAN CLUB Alema Jenkins and Olivia Myers from the SJC African American Club gave a powerpoint presentation to the Commission. Their mission is to create an organization not only for African American students but all students. They have three activities coming up: December 14th will be having Christmas Carols Karaoke at Simply Fabulicious; Martin Luther Day Celebration, which will be a street vendor type celebration; and in February will be bringing in dancers from the East Coast to give a history in dance. The club has requested $500 from the Commission to help with expenses. David John made a motion to approve sponsorship of $500, Mark Marquez seconded. OUTREACH AND EDUCATION UPDATES The Commissioners had a roundtable discussion regarding their participation in activities for the last month. Alicia Middleton asked if we could get a proclamation once again for Black History Month in February from the City of Farmington. OLD COMMISSION BUSINESS  Melissa Meechan has started filming for theater ads. There will be a monthly webcast and on Thursday will be filming March’s with the Boys & Girls Club.  Lynn Love asked the Commission if he could work on building a regional message. Lynn Love will visit the outlaying cities. Harelda, David and Mark will be helping.
