MINUTES
September 3, 2020
1. CALL TO ORDER
Chair Ramón Gálvez-Arango called the September 3, 2020 Regular Meeting for the Advisory Committee
for Persons with Disabilities to order at 6:12 p.m.
2. INTRODUCTIONS/ROLL CALL
Members Present: Herman Ajamian, John Borack, Kayla Borack, Ramón Gálvez-Arango, Philip Nisco,
Gary Osterbach, Susanne Seiden, and Jan Werts.
Members Absent: Terry Coakley, Lawrence Judson, Anna Nagmay, Leonard Santoro
Others Present: City Liaison, Yvette E. Aguilar, Community Services Manager
Councilmembers Absent: Kim Constantine, Patrick Harper
3. APPROVAL OF MINUTES FROM JANUARY 9, 2020
Committee Member Philip Nisco moves to approve the Meeting Minutes from January 9, 2020; Motion
seconded by Jan Werts. Motion carried 8-0 in favor of approving the minutes.
4. APPROVAL OF NOTES FROM MARCH 5, 2020
Committee Member Philip Nisco moves to approve the Meeting Notes from March 5, 2020; Motion
seconded by Jan Werts. Motion carried 8-0 in favor of approving the notes.
5. OLD BUSINESS
A. Subcommittee Reports
i. Recreation Programs - Committee Member Werts reported that there were 150 participants
in attendance at the February 2020 Valentines Dance; thanked all committee members, and
Larry Judson’s wife for her help.
ii. Disability Friendly Business Awards - Committee member Nisco reported that the goal of
program is to give to business employer, and employee who has gone above and beyond
call of duty. Discussion ensued about the challenge with people not getting the application,
and looking at all business. Timeline for program: July – Review of applications; October –
mayor issues award at City Council meeting.
iii. Honoring two students from the Special Education program - Committee member Borack
reported that the committee has historically honored two students from the Fountain Valley
High School Special Education Program, and now includes Los Amigos High School.
Committee anticipates contacting instructor once the school year starts and teachers are
settled for further discussion in Spring 2021.
B. Report on Committee Responsibilities – No report.
6. NEW BUSINESS
A. Election of Officers – John Borack motions to nominate himself as Chair, Susanne Seiden makes
motion to nominate herself as Vice-Chair. Seconded by Seiden and Borack, respectively. Motion
carried 8-0.
B. Ideas for Future Programming – Committee Member Ramón Gálvez-Arango reports that in-person
dance is not likely. Committee member Wertz agrees, mentions that people are hesitant to attend in-
person activities. Committee member Gary Osterbach reports that his daughter, Rachel, has
attended Zoom dances and enjoys them. Committee Member Kayla Borack agrees and Chair John
Borack shares that committee members can work through logistics for a Halloween themed dance,
volunteers to DJ for dance.
C. Sub-committee for Halloween Dance planning is formed and includes committee members Chair
Borack, K. Borack, Osterbach, and Werts.
7. PUBLIC COMMENTS – NONE
8. COMMITTEE COMMENTS
a. Committee member Seiden reports that a husband and wife who have physical disabilities had
an issue bringing in their trash bin and that someone is helping them bring it in. Mentions
Segerstrom has programs through the Argyos program for persons with disabilities/inclusive
programming.
b. Committee member Nisco thanks previous Chair Gálvez-Arango for his services and taking over
the committee. Chair Gálvez-Arango reports it was an honor to serve. Committee members
thank him.
c. Committee member Ajamian discusses desire to advertise dance on Facebook and put
information out for distribution regarding the upcoming dance.
9. ADJOURNMENT
With no further business before the Advisory Committee for Persons with Disabilities, Chair Borack
adjourned the meeting at 7 p.m. in honor of John Collins.
