City of Fountain Valley Advisory Committee for Persons with Disabilities MINUTES September 2, 2021 1.CALL TO ORDER Vice Chair Susanne Seiden called the September 2, 2021 Regular Meeting for the Advisory Committee for Persons with Disabilities to order at 6:05 p.m. 2.ROLL CALL/INTRODUCTIONS Members Present: Herman Ajamian, Richard King, Philip Nisco, Leonard Santoro, Susanne Seiden, Scott Quinlan, Nora Webb, and Jan Werts Members Absent: Ramón Gálvez-Arango, John Borack, and Kayla Borack Staff Present: City Liaison, Jenni Worsham, Community Services Manager Neda Alikhani, Recreation Specialist Councilmembers Present: Kim Constantine Public: Bob and Debbie Paul 3. APPROVAL OF MINUTES FROM May 6, 2021  Motion to approve Meeting Minutes from May 6, 2021 brought 1st by Committee Member Philip Nisco, 2nd by Committee Member Santoro. Motion approved 9-0-1. With an abstention by Committee Member Webb. 4. OLD BUSINESS A. Disability Friendly Business Awards – Phil Nisco – Discussion ensued about who would receive the Disability Friendly Business Award, which will be presented at the October 19th City Council meeting. Motion to distribute plaques to the three business nominated, along with certificates to all staff mentioned in the nominations, if no other applications are submitted by September 17th , 2nd by Committee Member Richard King. Motion approved 10-0. B. Social Media Campaign – Spotlight Series a. Kayla Borack & Nora Webb – Nominated in March, to be recognized in September & October- Committee Member Nora Webb rescinded her name from recognition. Motion to continue the Spotlight Series quarterly brought 1st by Committee Member Scott Quinlan, 2nd by Committee Member Herman Ajamian. Motion approved 10-0. b. Future Recommendations- Terry Coakley was to be recognized early in 2021, but was not, so Jenni Worsham to look for nomination and information to spotlight in September. Committee Member Scott Quinlan is nominated for the Spotlight Series feature in January. 5. NEW BUSINESS A. Resignation of Committee Member, Gary Osterbach- Committee Member Gary Osterbach officially resigned from the Advisory Committee for Adults with Disabilities. B. Dances a. Update on Virtual Zoom Dance – Friday, August 27, 2021 Theme: Summer Fun- Attendance to Zoom dances has dropped with only 21 RSVP’d for Summer Fun Dance and 17 in attendance. b. Next Dance Date – Friday, October 1, 2021 – Virtual or In-Person- Motion to resume in-person dances in February pending COVID restrictions brought 1st by Committee Member Webb, 2nd by Committee Member Herman Ajamian. Motion approved 10-0. c. Future Dance Calendar – December option- Motion to add December 3rd to the Dance Schedule brought 1st by Committee Member Leonard Santoro, 2nd by Committee Member Scott Quinlan. Motion approved 10-0. C. Disability Friendly Business Awards Recognition at City Council Meeting – Tuesday, October 19, 2021 at 6 p.m.- All committee members are encouraged to attend the meeting. D. Other Recreational Programming Opportunities- no comment. 6. PUBLIC COMMENTS  Community member Debbie Paul requests information for transportation services be promoted early, allowing better exposure. 7. COMMITTEE COMMENTS / Items for Future Consideration  Vice Chair Seiden discussed appointing Chair Borack as DJ for future in-person dances.  Committee Member Scott Quinlan requested Community Services Manager Jenni Worsham to inquire about access to the “public path of travel” within the older strip malls in Fountain Valley and to include information about clear pathways in the monthly community newsletter.  Committee Member Richard King discussed community modification for older strip malls and what the committee can do to address the issue.  Council Member Kim Constantine mentioned walkability as a current promoted item by city officials, engagement by community organizations are requested.  Committee Member Herman Ajamian advised that access to “public path travel” and that commercial buildings are owner’s responsibility in regards to business licensing. 8. Adjourn to November 4, 2021 The Advisory Committee for Persons with Disabilities has been tasked with:  Assisting City departments in implementation of guidelines for accessible facilities;  Facilitating development of recreational programs useable by persons with disabilities;  Obtaining information concerning special recreation equipment;  Facilitating development of barrier-free buildings and facilities within the city;  Working with various levels of education on the development & implementation of programs to assure maximum integration for students with disabilities;  Developing community awareness of employment potentials of persons with disabilities.
